A single central system for all three levels of a very large home
Finished basement, main floor and upper floor: in a very large home with ductwork, a central heat pump can heat and cool all three levels from a single unit, provided the air is well distributed. The Central Heat Pump ARCOAIRE HSH6 Premium | 5 Tons - 60,000 BTU (Air Handler FJMA4X) - R410A pairs the HSH660GKA outdoor unit with the FJMA4X60L0DB indoor unit, an air handler that pushes air through the existing duct system.
This pairing from Arcoaire's Premium range, in the 5-ton size, is offered while supplies last.
The 5-ton size, confirmed room by room
The 5-ton size typically targets very large homes: a home with two spacious levels and a fully finished basement, an enlarged split-level, or a home whose successive additions are all served by the same duct system. These are typical examples; floor area alone never justifies this size.
The load calculation, room by room and level by level, takes into account insulation, windows, airtightness and the share of below-grade basement walls. If the calculation points to a smaller size, we recommend it: an oversized unit runs short cycles and worsens the gaps between levels.
What the certificate shows
The pairing of the HSH660GKA outdoor unit and the FJMA4X60L0DB indoor unit carries certificate AHRI 210448688, issued under the former test method, which predates SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings. Its ratings are not directly comparable to the SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings of recent units, so we do not mix them with those. We confirm during the visit the ratings that apply to the installed system.
Comparable data before you choose
For this reason, this page publishes no efficiency rating for this pairing. If you are weighing several systems, we present you with data measured the same way, so the comparison is fair. The confirmed ratings are also used to check grant eligibility before signing.
Keep in mind that it is the ratings of the complete pairing that count, not those of the outdoor unit alone. The same outdoor unit combined with another coil would give other results; that is why we install the pairing exactly as it is certified.
How the system works
In winter, the HSH660GKA outdoor unit captures the heat contained in the outdoor air; the R-410A refrigerant carries it to the indoor unit's coil, whose blower distributes it through the ducts. In summer, a reversing valve flips the cycle: the home's heat is released outdoors and the coil removes moisture from the air.
The FJMA4X60L0DB indoor unit takes the place of the old furnace or air handler. It houses the coil, the blower, the filter and the backup heat.
Three levels, three behaviours
In a three-level home, warm air rises. In winter, the basement tends to stay cool while the upper floor warms up easily; in summer, it is the upper floor that becomes hard to cool, under the roof, while the basement stays cool on its own. A single thermostat has to deal with all three behaviours.
That is why the setup of the duct system matters as much as the unit. Air must be directed downward in winter and upward in summer, and the air from each level must be able to return to the air handler.
Air returns and balancing by level
A home with only one air return in the basement struggles to renew the air upstairs. Ideally, each level has its own return, and closed bedrooms have a path for air, through a transfer grille or a gap under the door. We check these points during the visit and list the useful corrections in the quote.
During commissioning, we set the dampers for the current season and show you how to adjust them for the next one. Running the blower continuously, depending on the thermostat setting, also helps mix the air between levels.
Where to place the thermostat
The thermostat of a central system stands for the whole house. It should be on the main level, on an interior wall, away from direct sun, the kitchen, an exterior door and the supply registers. A poorly placed thermostat makes the whole house heat or cool according to a single room that is not representative. During the replacement, we check its location and move it if needed; the new thermostat must be compatible with a heat pump and its backup heat.
Some thermostats can also take into account sensors placed in other rooms, for example an upstairs bedroom. In a three-level home, this option helps find a setpoint that suits the whole family; we discuss it during the visit.
In deep cold, the backup heat
This pairing is a conventional central heat pump; it is not listed as a cold-climate heat pump. Its heating capacity decreases as the outdoor temperature drops. In deep cold, the air handler's backup heat, or the existing furnace in an installation that keeps it, takes over. In a home of this size, we size it carefully according to the load calculation and the available electrical capacity.
The finished basement, often the coolest level in winter, is the one that benefits most from good balancing during this period: sending more air downward keeps all three levels comfortable without raising the setpoint for the whole house.
LogisVert
This pairing does not carry an amount on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 19, 2026. If the grant matters for your project, we will point you to an eligible pairing of comparable size.
Installation in a ducted home
The indoor unit takes the place of the old furnace or air handler and connects to the existing duct system. Before the quote, we check duct sizes and the air return, because a central heat pump only delivers its full efficiency if the airflow keeps up. The outdoor unit goes on a stand, above the snow line, on a dedicated circuit.
The mechanical room and the job
In a finished basement, the air handler is often in a small mechanical room, sometimes next to a bedroom or an office. We check the available space, access for changing the filter and for maintenance, and condensate drainage: if there is no floor drain nearby, we plan a condensate pump.
- Installation of the air handler on the existing plenum and return, with the planned backup heat.
- Outdoor unit on a solid stand, above the snow line, away from snow sliding off the roof.
- Line set insulated, evacuated and checked; wall penetration sealed.
- Electrical: dedicated circuit for the heat pump, supply for the backup heat, panel capacity checked during the visit.
- Commissioning: charge, temperatures, airflow on each level, thermostat and an explanation of the settings.
Maintenance
Replace the system filter according to its format, keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coil, condensate drain and electrical connections. In winter, white vapour during defrost is normal. If a condensate pump is installed, check at the start of summer that it switches on properly.
AirGreen, for the life of the installation
A family business active for more than fifteen years in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore, we hold RBQ licences for ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work and carry $5,000,000 in liability insurance. The in-home assessment is free, the quote is in writing, and our financing options let you choose the right unit rather than the cheapest one.
