Air that is mixed and filtered throughout the house, through the existing ducts
A central heat pump does more than heat and cool: its blower moves the air of the whole house through the ducts, passes it through a filter and sends it back to every room. The Central Heat Pump ARCOAIRE HSH6 Premium | 2 Tons - 24,000 BTU (Air Handler FJMA4X) - R410A pairs the HSH624GKA outdoor unit with the FJMA4X24L0BC cabinet, which takes the place of the old electric furnace and pushes air through the existing duct system.
This pairing from Arcoaire's premium series handles the cooling of the house and most of the heating, with a single thermostat and no unit in the rooms.
A central heat pump for a mid-size home
The 2-ton size is meant for mid-size homes that already have ducts: a bungalow with a basement, a two-level semi-detached house, a compact two-storey house with upgraded insulation. In this type of home, it is often the size that replaces an electric furnace paired with an old central air conditioner.
The exact size still depends on the house. Wall and attic insulation, the age of the windows, orientation and how much of the basement is heated change the needs far more than floor area. We confirm the size with a room-by-room load calculation; a more demanding house may need the next size up, a very well-insulated one the size below.
The FJMA4X cabinet, at the heart of the system
The FJMA4X24L0BC cabinet is an air handler. It brings three functions together in one casing: the coil, where the refrigerant warms or cools the air; the blower, which pushes that air through the ducts; and the space for the backup electric heating elements, which supplement the heat pump in deep cold. The system filter sits at the cabinet inlet or in the return air just before it.
The cabinet goes where the old furnace stood, in the basement or a utility closet, and connects to the existing supply plenum and return air. Outside, the HSH624GKA unit contains the compressor, the outdoor coil and its fan. The two units are linked by an insulated copper refrigerant line and by the control wiring; it is this exact pairing that carries the certificate described below, and we install it as is.
Filtering the air of the whole house
All the air returning to the cabinet passes through the filter before it is heated or cooled. Each pass captures part of the dust, pet hair and pollen circulating in the house. This is a real advantage of a central system over units installed room by room.
Choosing the filter is still a balance. A finer filter captures more particles, but it also restricts the air; if it is too restrictive, it reduces the airflow and the heat pump's efficiency. During the visit, we look at the existing filter rack and propose a format that filters well without choking the system. A filter needs care: checked every month in season, it is replaced as soon as it is loaded.
A useful reminder: a central heat pump recirculates the air of the house, it does not bring in fresh air. Air renewal is the job of an air exchanger, a separate unit that we also install.
What the certificate shows
The pairing of the HSH624GKA outdoor unit and the FJMA4X24L0BC indoor unit carries certificate AHRI 210448324, issued under the former test procedure, the one that came before SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings. Its ratings do not compare directly with the SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings of recent equipment, so we do not mix them. We confirm the ratings that apply to the installed system during the visit.
If you compare this system with others, do it on the same basis. We put the options side by side during the visit, and the written quote lists the exact model numbers of both units.
Winter: the heat pump and the backup share the work
A heat pump moves heat instead of producing it. With the R-410A refrigerant, the outdoor unit captures heat from the air, the compressor concentrates it and the cabinet's coil passes it to the air of the house. In summer, a reversing valve turns the cycle around.
Like any conventional heat pump, this one supplies less heat as the cold intensifies, while the house asks for more. In deep cold, the cabinet's backup elements take over the missing share. The thermostat, designed for a heat pump with backup, makes the heat pump work first and only calls on the backup when needed. We size these elements from the load calculation and the capacity of the electrical panel.
Summer: cooling and humidity
In summer, the same cabinet cools the air and removes humidity, which flows out through the condensate drain. Filtered, dried air circulates through every room served, which makes heavy days much more bearable, without a window unit.
A properly sized unit runs long enough to dry the air well. That is one more reason not to oversize: a unit that is too big cools quickly, stops, and leaves the humidity behind.
The thermostat's continuous fan mode also extends the filter's effect: the blower moves air even when the heat pump is neither heating nor cooling, which evens out temperatures between rooms and sends the air through the filter more often. We show you this setting at commissioning.
LogisVert
This pairing does not carry an amount on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 19, 2026. If the grant matters for your project, we will point you to an eligible pairing of comparable size.
How we install a central heat pump
The visit and the load calculation
The in-home assessment is free. We measure the rooms, note the insulation and windows, and run the load calculation. We then inspect the duct system: duct sizes, number of registers, return air, filter rack and condition of the plenum, because a central heat pump only delivers its full efficiency if the airflow keeps up. Finally, we check the capacity of the electrical panel for the outdoor unit and the cabinet's backup.
The job
- Removal of the old furnace and, where applicable, the old air conditioner, with recovery of the refrigerant.
- Installation of the FJMA4X cabinet, connection to the plenum and return air, installation of the filter rack, condensate drain to a floor drain or a pump.
- Installation of the outdoor unit on a stand, above the snow line, away from roof drips and dryer vents.
- Refrigerant line in insulated copper, brazing, pressure test and vacuum.
- Electrical: dedicated circuit, outdoor disconnect, power to the cabinet and backup, thermostat.
- Commissioning: refrigerant charge, airflow, defrost and settings, then an explanation of how the system works and how to care for the filter.
Maintenance
The filter is the most important maintenance task: check it every month during the heating and cooling seasons, and replace it according to its format. Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and do not cover it in winter. Plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coil, the condensate drain and the electrical connections. In winter, the white vapour during defrost is normal.
Warranty
Warranty: 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts and 6 years on labor.
AirGreen, for the life of the installation
A family business active for more than fifteen years in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore, we hold RBQ licences for ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work and carry $5,000,000 in liability insurance. The in-home assessment is free, the quote is in writing, and our financing options let you choose the right unit rather than the cheapest one.
