Quick facts
Abrasive cloth for copper, also called plumber’s sand cloth, is an abrasive strip on a cloth backing, 1-1/2 in wide, sold in 10 or 25 yard rolls. It is used to clean the outside of copper tubes before brazing or soldering.
Why preparation makes the difference
Brazing alloy only flows properly into a joint if the metal is clean. Oxide, grease from fingers and job-site dirt keep it from wetting the copper, and the joint may leak during the pressure test. A few passes of cloth bring the tube back to bright metal, where it will go into the fitting.
Two roll lengths
- 10 yards (about 9.1 m): a handy size for the tool kit.
- 25 yards (about 22.9 m): for the shop, the truck or large job sites.
The cloth backing wraps around the tube without tearing, so you can work all the way around a tube with a back-and-forth motion.
Cleaning properly without contaminating the line
Clean only the part of the tube that will go into the fitting. Hold the opening downward so particles do not fall into the line: in a refrigerant circuit, they can clog a filter or an expansion valve. Wipe with a clean cloth, then do not touch the cleaned surface again. For the inside of fittings, use a brush sized for the diameter.

Frequently asked questions
Why clean copper before brazing?
Oxide, grease and dirt stop the alloy from wetting the metal and flowing into the joint. A clean tube gives a tight joint the first time.
Should the inside of the fitting be cleaned too?
Yes. The cloth is for the outside of the tube; for the inside of a fitting, use a brush sized for the tube.
Can particles get into the line?
Avoid it. Keep the opening down while cleaning and wipe before fitting: in a refrigerant circuit, particles can plug a metering device or a filter.
Do you do the brazing work?
Yes. Our technicians prep and braze every refrigerant line joint on our installations in Greater Montréal.
