Quick facts
A.C.R. soft copper tube is the tube you uncoil to run the refrigerant lines of a heat pump or an air conditioner. Sold in a 50 ft coil, it is bent on site and follows the route between the indoor unit and the outdoor unit with a minimum of fittings.
Soft tube for running refrigerant lines
We use it for the liquid and suction lines of wall-mounted heat pumps, multi-zone systems and central heat pumps, to extend an existing line or to build a custom line that is then insulated. The ASTM B280 standard covers seamless copper tube for field connection and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
Ten outside diameters
The coil is available in 1/8 in, 3/16 in, 1/4 in, 5/16 in, 3/8 in, 1/2 in, 5/8 in, 3/4 in, 7/8 in and 1-1/8 in. A.C.R. tube is designated by its actual outside diameter: a 5/8 in tube fits a 5/8 in fitting and matches a 5/8 in equipment port. The diameters to use are in the unit’s installation manual.
Bending and cutting without damaging the tube
- Bend with a tube bender of the right diameter so you don’t crush or kink the tube.
- Cut with a tube cutter, deburr, then seal the end of the coil to keep it clean and dry.
- Connect by brazing under a light flow of dry nitrogen, or by flaring on units with flare connections.
Work on a refrigerant circuit is reserved for a qualified refrigeration technician.
Supplied and installed by AirGreen across Greater Montréal
Our refrigeration technicians run, braze and insulate the refrigerant lines on every installation in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore and on the North Shore. RBQ licence 5645-9605-01. The basic tube behind every refrigerant line
A soft coil unrolls and bends along the route, with fewer fittings than rigid tube.
- Liquid and suction lines of wall-mount, multi-zone and central heat pumps
- Replacing or extending an existing line
- Small sizes for refrigeration circuits and short connections
- Custom lines, insulated afterwards with tubular insulation

What to know before installing
- Take line sizes from the equipment installation manual, never by eye.
- Bend with a bender sized for the tube so it does not kink.
- Cut with a tube cutter, deburr, and close the end of the coil after each cut.
- Work on a refrigerant circuit is reserved for a qualified refrigeration technician.

Frequently asked questions
Is the size inside or outside diameter?
Outside. ACR tube is designated by its actual outside diameter, unlike plumbing tube, which uses a nominal size.
How is it different from a pre-insulated line set?
This is a single bare tube that you insulate yourself. A line set already pairs the liquid and gas lines under insulation.
Can this tube be flared?
Yes, soft tube flares with a proper flaring tool. Larger sizes are usually brazed instead.
Can you install the piping?
Yes. Our technicians run, braze and insulate refrigerant lines on every heat pump installation in Greater Montréal.
