Repair of a Zephyr wall-mounted air conditioner in Sainte-Julie

A sudden breakdown in the summer heat

One particularly hot afternoon in Sainte-Julie , our AirGreen team received an emergency call from a customer whose Zephyr wall-mounted air conditioner had just stopped blowing cold air. The unit was displaying a high ambient temperature, despite being set to 23°C. In a newer home in the residential sector, the failure quickly transformed the indoor comfort into a veritable furnace.

On site, we found that the air conditioner, installed for about five years, showed signs of damp around the wall and a partially open plasterboard , exposing the refrigeration ducts. This type of configuration often indicates an incomplete or poorly insulated previous intervention , which could cause condensation or leakage problems.

Precise diagnosis: a condensate leak and an insulation defect

Our first step was to test the system's operation in air conditioning mode. The outdoor compressor started fine, but the indoor unit produced a slight clicking noise followed by water dripping from the back of the wall. This symptom pointed to a problem with clogged drainage or defective insulation in the drain pipe .

After carefully removing the cover from the wall unit, we found:

  • A buildup of stagnant water in the condensate tray.

  • A drain pipe pinched behind the wall, caused by a cutout that was too narrow.

  • Cracked insulation on the refrigerant line, allowing condensation and moisture to build up.

These two problems combined explained the leakage and loss of efficiency of the system.

Repair and restoration of the installation

To restore the Zephyr air conditioner to perfect condition, we carried out a series of targeted interventions:

  1. Partial disassembly of the wall unit to access the drain pipe.

  2. Complete replacement of the drain pipe with a smooth-walled flexible model, preventing any accumulation of water.

  3. Re-insulation around the refrigeration duct using closed heat-resistant foam, eliminating the risk of condensation in the partition.

  4. Filling and finishing of the wall , in coordination with the owner, to ensure an aesthetic finish and compliance with HVAC installation standards.

Once this work was completed, we turned the system back on and observed an immediate resumption of cooling , with constant airflow and normal condensate drainage.

Result: performance restored and wall dried out

In less than two hours, the indoor temperature dropped from 28°C to 23°C. The customer immediately felt a return to stable and quiet comfort. We then checked all the parameters:

  • Blowing temperature: 9°C.

  • Refrigerant pressure: normal.

  • Condensate drainage: fluid and without water return.

To prevent any recurrence, we have left the customer with some maintenance recommendations :

  • Have the condensate drain checked at the start of each season .

  • Avoid any modifications to the wall without checking the HVAC ducts .

  • Schedule a complete annual maintenance including coil cleaning and refrigerant testing.
