Complete diagnostics and system upgrade by AirGreen
At AirGreen , we were recently called for a Goodman central heat pump repair in Chomedey , a well-known residential neighborhood in Laval. The customer contacted us after noticing that their air conditioning system was no longer adequately cooling their home despite a thermostat set at 21°C. The air blowing through the vents was lukewarm, and the outdoor condenser seemed to be running intermittently.
Our team therefore carried out a complete diagnosis in order to identify the cause of the problem and restore the full efficiency of the HVAC system .
Initial on-site inspection
Upon our arrival, we carried out a series of visual and functional checks on the Goodman condenser installed outside the building.
Here are our first observations:
-
The outdoor fan was running intermittently.
-
The compressor would start up, then stop after a few minutes.
-
The observed pressures were unstable, indicating a possible imbalance in the refrigeration circuit .
-
The interior air filter was clean, ruling out any airflow restriction.
To confirm our assumptions, we connected a diagnostic manifold (see image) to the high and low pressure service valves to obtain an accurate reading of the system's behavior.
Technical diagnosis
Initial surveys revealed:
-
Low pressure below normal;
-
High pressure slightly above the recommended range;
-
Abnormally high discharge temperature.
These values clearly indicated a partial overload of the circuit combined with a buildup of moisture in the refrigerant — a situation often caused by inadequate maintenance or poor vacuuming during a previous intervention.
To confirm, we performed a leak test with pressurized nitrogen: no leaks detected .
The problem therefore lay inside the circuit, probably at the level of the dehydrator (drying filter), which was saturated and no longer fulfilled its role.
Repairs and interventions carried out
Our technician took the following steps:
-
Complete refrigerant recovery to meet environmental standards.
-
Replacement of the desiccant filter , an essential part for removing humidity and impurities from the circuit.
-
Thorough vacuum draw for 45 minutes to ensure a perfectly dry and leak-proof system.
-
Recharge with R410A refrigerant to the exact charge specified by Goodman.
-
System restart and complete calibration of pressures and temperatures.
Results after intervention
After the restart, the measurements stabilized within the optimal ranges:
-
Low pressure: 118 psi
-
High pressure: 390 psi
-
Indoor blown air temperature: 10.8°C
-
Indoor ambient temperature: 23.5°C
The temperature difference of more than 12°C between the blown air and the ambient air proved the complete return of the central heat pump's performance . The customer immediately noticed a significant improvement in indoor comfort.
Advice given to the client
To prevent any recurrence of the problem, we recommended:
-
A complete annual maintenance including pressure checks, cleaning the outdoor coil and checking electrical connections.
-
Installing a condenser guard to limit the accumulation of debris and moisture during the winter.
-
Preventive air filter replacement every three months during the heating and cooling season.
