Gree heat pump repair in Sainte-Rose

A precision intervention in the evening: restarting a frozen Gree heat pump

At AirGreen , we know that HVAC emergencies don't wait until tomorrow. It was precisely at the end of the day, during a biting cold spell in Sainte-Rose (Laval) , that we received a call from a worried customer: his Gree wall-mounted heat pump was no longer heating properly, and a mass of ice had formed around the outdoor unit.

Initial diagnosis: a heat pump immobilized by frost

Upon arriving on site, our technician immediately noticed that the outdoor unit—securely mounted against a brick wall—was completely covered in frost , preventing the fan from rotating freely. The customer had noticed that the unit was constantly alternating between heating and defrosting, never reaching the desired indoor temperature.

After an initial visual check, we noted:

  • A buildup of ice around the base of the compressor;

  • Partially blocked vents ;

  • A frozen condensate drain pipe ;

  • And exposed wiring , probably affected by moisture.

Steps of in-depth diagnosis

  1. Checking the defrost cycle :
    When manually forcing the defrost mode, we observed irregular operation of the reversing valve.
    Initial hypothesis : faulty electronic control board or temperature sensor.

  2. Pressure and refrigerant measurement :
    The pressures were slightly below normal values for an outside temperature of -7°C.
    Observation : partial loss of refrigerant, which reduces the system's ability to perform effective defrosting.

  3. Inspection of wiring and connections :
    A slight deposit of oxidation on the electrical terminals confirmed that moisture had infiltrated , making the electronic control less accurate.

Repair: precision and safety above all

To restore optimal operation of the heat pump:

  • We manually defrosted the outdoor unit using a hot air blower, never using tools that could damage the fins.

  • We then replaced the outdoor coil temperature sensor , which was responsible for the incorrect frost point reading.

  • A partial recharge with R410A refrigerant was carried out, bringing the pressures back to the manufacturer's standards.

  • Finally, we protected the electrical connections with suitable insulation to prevent any further water infiltration.

Performance test after repair

Once restarted:

  • The defrost cycle started normally after 42 minutes of continuous operation.

  • The indoor temperature rose from 18°C to 22.5°C in less than 20 minutes.

  • The compressor has regained its acoustic stability : no more vibrations, no more untimely speed variations.

Advice given to the client

Our technicians took the time to advise the customer on good winter practices :

  • Clear the area around the compressor after each snowfall.

  • Never turn off the heat pump completely in very cold weather to avoid difficult restarting.

  • Schedule preventative maintenance in the spring to clean the coils and check for leaks.

A cold evening, comfort found

The customer, impressed by the speed and thoroughness of our intervention, was able to enjoy stable and quiet heating from the end of the visit.
This Gree heat pump , well maintained, will still be able to offer several winters of performance and energy savings.
