An outdoor unit that no longer started in the spring
At AirGreen , we recently performed a service call in Blainville , on Montreal's North Shore, for a Goodman wall-mounted heat pump that the customer complained would no longer restart when the weather returned. After a trouble-free winter, the system remained completely inactive in cooling mode—no noise, no fan, no compressor response.
This type of situation is typical of residential HVAC systems that frequently alternate between heating and cooling: a simple stuck electronic component or oxidized connection can be enough to prevent startup.
Initial diagnosis: voltage present, but compressor silent
Our technician began by checking the power supply to the outdoor unit using a multimeter. The Square D circuit breaker and safety switch displayed a normal voltage of 240V , confirming that the problem was not with the power supply.
Then, a visual inspection revealed that:
-
the wiring to the compressor terminal was slightly corroded;
-
the control board inside the unit showed traces of moisture accumulated during the winter;
-
the power switch did not engage, despite a command from the interior thermostat.
These elements directed the diagnosis towards a faulty control card or a blocked contactor .
Step 1: Test the board and control signal
We checked the voltage of the 24V signal sent from the indoor unit: it was reaching the outdoor unit. This ruled out a communication problem. The problem was therefore located locally in the Goodman condenser.
The contactor , a standard two-pole model, was tested manually. By pressing directly on the core, the compressor and fan started to operate—a sign that the problem was indeed with the electronic control , not the mechanical components.
Step 2: Replacing the external control board
We removed the old board, cleaned the connectors and installed a new OEM Goodman control board . Before replacement, we took care of:
-
clean the terminals with an anti-corrosion product;
-
check the resistance of the compressor and fan motor;
-
reposition the control wires in a new sheath to improve the seal .
Once the new card was installed, the heat pump immediately restarted in cooling mode.
Step 3: Verification of complete operation
After 10 minutes of operation, the readings were perfect:
-
indoor blowing temperature: 10.1°C ;
-
suction temperature: 24.3°C ;
-
difference: 14.2°C , indicating excellent performance.
The compressor ran smoothly, without excessive vibration or pressure variation. We also measured:
-
Suction pressure: 120 psi;
-
Discharge pressure: 330 psi.
These values were within the manufacturer's specifications for an outside temperature of 18°C.
Result: a system relaunched and protected for the season
Thanks to this intervention, the customer's Goodman heat pump returned to normal operation, with:
-
a new and reliable control board ;
-
better protection against humidity ;
-
and optimal energy efficiency for the whole summer.
We also added a sealing cap to the outdoor junction box to prevent water infiltration—an essential precaution for exposed installations.

Maintenance Tips for Wall-Mounted Heat Pump Owners
To avoid spring breakdowns:
-
Turn off the power at the outdoor circuit breaker during the winter, then turn it back on 24 hours before the first start .
-
Clean the condenser fins and clear the area around the unit.
-
Check the breaker box and cables for corrosion .
-
And above all, have AirGreen preventive maintenance carried out before each season.
Regular maintenance extends the life of the electronic board and protects the compressor against unintentional restarts.
In conclusion, this Goodman wall-mounted heat pump repair in Blainville clearly illustrates the importance of accurate diagnosis and regular maintenance. Thanks to our intervention, the customer now benefits from a reliable, efficient system that's ready for summer —a comfort guarantee from AirGreen .
