A service call following a cooling failure
One hot and humid afternoon in Brossard , a customer contacted us after noticing that their Midea wall-mounted heat pump was no longer blowing cold air, even when the compressor appeared to be running. This type of problem is common in residential settings, especially when the unit has not received preventative maintenance for several seasons.
Upon arrival, we found a typical wall-mounted installation : an indoor unit placed above a patio door, neatly piped along the wall to the outdoors. However, the customer had noticed unusual water flow along the insulated pipe—a sign often indicating a drainage or refrigerant problem .
In-depth diagnosis of a combined problem: leak and blocked drain
Before any intervention, our AirGreen technician carried out a series of standard checks:
-
Visual inspection of the evaporator coil — presence of excessive condensation.
-
Test the temperature sensor to verify the cooling mode reading.
-
Checking the air flow and the fan motor.
-
Condensate drain control.
The result: the drain was partially blocked by a buildup of dust and algae, causing water to back up into the indoor unit. In addition, the R410A refrigerant pressure was slightly lower than normal, confirming a small leak at the outdoor flare.
These two anomalies combined perfectly explained the lack of performance and the formation of visible moisture around the pipe.
Complete repair and performance restoration
The intervention was carried out in two complementary parts:
1. Unblocking the drain and complete sanitation
-
Use a condensate vacuum to clear the pipe.
-
Application of an enzymatic treatment to eliminate the microorganisms causing the blockage.
-
Checking the slope of the drain to avoid future stagnation.
2. Repair of the refrigeration circuit
-
Tightening and remanufacturing the flare at the wall outlet.
-
Refrigerant upgrade R410A to Midea specifications.
-
Leakage control using an electronic detector.
Once these fixes were applied, the heat pump was restarted. Within minutes, the blown air reached 8°C output —an indicator of optimal performance. The condensation rate returned to normal, and no more water was visible around the wall.
Preventive maintenance advice given to the customer
At AirGreen , we always emphasize the importance of professional annual maintenance , especially for wall-mounted installations. In this case, the customer had noticed the problem after several years without maintenance. We therefore recommended:
-
A complete cleaning of the indoor coil once a year.
-
A check of the refrigerant level at the start of each season.
-
Installing a drain elbow with a check valve to prevent water from flowing back.
These simple precautions extend the life of the heat pump and guarantee stable performance, even during periods of intense heat or intense air conditioning in Montreal and on the South Shore.
Restored comfort and renewed efficiency
After the repair, the apartment's ambient temperature dropped from 27°C to 22°C in less than 45 minutes . The client, visibly relieved, was able to once again enjoy the peace and freshness of his Midea heat pump, without excessive noise or water leaks.
Technical monitoring confirmed:
-
Stabilized system pressure ,
-
Standardized indoor humidity level ,
-
and functional drain without backflow .
