Understanding the types of heat pumps eligible for financial assistance from the LogisVert program

As part of our mission to offer high-performance HVAC solutions tailored to the needs of our customers throughout Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore , we regularly receive an essential question: what types of heat pumps are eligible for subsidies offered by Hydro-Québec through the LogisVert program ? At AirGreen, we have studied in depth the eligibility criteria of this program to effectively guide our customers towards the best decisions, both in terms of energy and finance.

A strategic subsidy to accelerate the energy transition

Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert program was set up to encourage energy-efficiency measures in the residential sector. One of the program’s flagship measures is the grant for buying and installing an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump – including wall-mounted (mini-split) or central (air-to-air split system) models.

Eligible heat pumps: definitions, requirements and criteria to be met

    1. Eligible ENERGY STAR heat pumps

To be eligible, a heat pump must meet the following conditions:

    • System type :

      • Wall-mounted heat pump (mini air-to-air split) with one or more indoor units.

      • Central heat pump (air-air split system) with one indoor unit and one outdoor unit.

    • Technical characteristics :

      • The equipment must be new .

      • It must have been purchased in Quebec .

      • The installation must be carried out in an eligible dwelling (house, condo, multiplex, etc.).

      • The system must be ENERGY STAR certified (AHRI or ENERGY STAR number on the invoice) and the outdoor unit must have a rated capacity of at least 12,000 BTU/h.

      • The amount depends on the certification: $50 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C for an ENERGY STAR model, $120 for an ENERGY STAR cold-climate model.

Before buying, check the ENERGY STAR certification (and the “cold climate” designation) of the exact model, indoor and outdoor units.

    2. ENERGY STAR cold-climate heat pumps (highest rate)

These models keep good heating capacity in extreme cold. They qualify for a higher grant, with no mandatory air sealing work.

    Additional eligibility criteria :

    • The heat pump must be ENERGY STAR certified and of the “cold climate” type.

    • Air sealing is not required for the heat pump. It is part of another measure, roof insulation with air sealing ($1,500), which covers in particular these openings:

      • windows

      • exterior doors

      • patio doors

      • attic hatches

      • kitchen hoods

      • bathroom fans

      • electrical outlets

      • homes

    The grant is calculated at $120 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C, which can mean significant assistance: for example $1,440 for 12,000 BTU/h at -8 °C and $2,160 for 18,000 BTU/h at -8 °C.

    Eligible housing types

The program covers a wide range of residential buildings:

    • Single-family home (detached, semi-detached or row)

    • Condo (individual unit)

    • Multiplex (up to 19 dwellings)

    • Apartments in buildings with 20 or more units (with individual meter)

    The accommodation must:

    • Be located in Quebec

    • Be supplied with electricity by Hydro-Québec, an independent or municipal network

    • Be habitable year-round

    What is not admissible :

    • Used or previously installed heat pumps

    • Replacement of a single indoor or outdoor unit (must be a complete system)

    • Installation in non-insulated areas (e.g. attic or crawl space)

    • Replacement of equipment under warranty

Details of the financial assistance offered by the LogisVert program

Type of heat pump installed Amount of financial aid
    ENERGY STAR wall-mounted or central heat pump $50/1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C – e.g. $900 for 18,000 BTU/h at -8 °C
    ENERGY STAR cold-climate heat pump $120/1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C – e.g. $2,160 for 18,000 BTU/h at -8 °C

Example: a Sharp ZU1 15,000 BTU heat pump installed by AirGreen in Oka qualified for $2,172 in financial assistance thanks to its high efficiency and compliant installation.

Financing Bonus – an additional incentive

The program also offers a 5% bonus on total grants if at least two different measures are carried out in the same home within nine months (e.g. heat pump + heat pump dryer, or heat pump + roof insulation with air sealing).

Steps to follow to benefit from the grant

    1. Choose a qualified contractor (like AirGreen), holding a valid RBQ license.

    2. Install an eligible model, ENERGY STAR certified (ideally “cold climate”).

    3. Get a detailed invoice , with RBQ license numbers, model details, GST/QST numbers, installation address, cost and proof of payment.

    4. Photograph the outdoor unit nameplate (serial number + model).

    5. Submit your request on the official portal: www.logisvert.ca within a maximum of 9 months following installation .

    6. Maintain access to the home in the event of an audit by Hydro-Québec.
