Health Canada recommends a smoke CADR at least equal to two-thirds of the floor area. The KCP110CW (smoke CADR 347) is suited up to 520 sq ft, the KCP70CW (255) up to 382 sq ft. The manufacturer recommends the GREE up to 220 sq ft.
Clean Air Delivery Rate: the flow of clean air the unit delivers, measured at maximum speed for smoke, dust and pollen. The higher the number, the larger the room can be.
High-efficiency particulate air. The true HEPA filter in the Sharp units captures 99.97% of particles 0.3 µm and larger in the air that passes through it.
Yes, that’s the case Health Canada describes: choose the highest smoke CADR possible, keep doors and windows closed and let the unit run.
No. Carbon helps with some odours, with no standard rating for gases, and a purifier deals with neither carbon monoxide nor radon (Health Canada).
They do different things. The exchanger replaces the air in the whole house with outdoor air; the purifier cleans the air in one room. Health Canada puts ventilation and removing sources first.
In winter, heated air gets dry. The Sharp KCP110CW and KCP70CW purify and humidify at the same time, up to 500 and 400 sq ft. Health Canada aims for 30 to 50% humidity.
At Hydro-Québec’s Rate D (11.142 ¢/kWh at most), a KCP110CW at medium speed, 24 hours a day, costs about $26 a year. At maximum speed, about $92.
On the Sharp units, the HEPA filter and the carbon filter can last up to 2 years depending on the environment; the pre-filter is washable. We give you the part numbers.
