The BTU number on the box doesn’t tell the whole winter story. According to Sharp’s spec sheets, at -30°C the CHU 12,000 still delivers 9,700 BTU/h, more than the CU 18,000. The CHU, CU and FilterSweep series heat down to -30°C, the Airest and the CU 12,000 down to -27°C. 01 · Our SHARP air conditioning, ventilation and heating products
Four current wall units, two multi-zones, two purifiers.
Sharp’s 2025-2026 lineup comes down to four names: CHU, CU, FilterSweep and Airest. The ZU1 and ZHU1 series, which we’ve installed a lot, and the previous generations are still in the catalogue. Pick a type.
CHU series
Sharp’s top of the line: the most heat at -30°C for its size, motion sensor, Plasmacluster ion indicator.
CU series
The widest lineup: four sizes, dark grey in 15,000 and 18,000, heads compatible with the CU multi-zone.
FilterSweep
A brush cleans the filter automatically after each use and pushes the dust into a bin. A first in North America, according to Sharp.
ZU1 and ZHU1
The generation we’ve installed the most. Still offered in 12,000 to 24,000 (ZU1) and 12,000 or 18,000 (ZHU1).

Sharp offers a “Dark Gray” finish on the CU 15,000, the CU 18,000 and the CHU 12,000. All the others are white. Pick a model, then a colour.

Plasmacluster, FilterSweep, Airest: what Sharp actually says.
Sharp puts the focus on the air in the room, not just on heat. We stick to what its own documents state, caveats included.

How Sharp describes its ions

A small electrical discharge produces positive and negative ions surrounded by water molecules.

On a surface, these ions combine into OH radicals.

According to Sharp, these radicals remove hydrogen from surface proteins, which reduces their activity.
What Sharp itself points out: its lab tests used ion concentrations far higher than the units produce, often in a one-cubic-metre box, and results vary from room to room. For its heat pumps in North America, Sharp makes no health claims: the manuals talk about released ions and a cycle that dries the inside of the unit to limit mould.

Yes. According to Sharp’s spec sheets, the CHU, CU (15,000 to 24,000), FilterSweep and CU multi-zone series heat down to -30°C. The CU 12,000 and the Airest go down to -27°C, like the ZU, ZU1, ZHU, ZHU1 and BU generations. The TU and THU (R-410A) are older.
