When the old 2-ton air conditioner gives out: an economy R-410A replacement

A direct replacement for a house that is already equipped

The scenario is common: the house has had central air for years, the electric furnace and the ducts are in good condition, but the condensing unit outside will not start again. There is not always a reason to redo everything. The R4A4S24AKANA, the 2-ton (24,000 BTU/h) outdoor unit of ICP's economy R4A4S series, replaces that part, on R-410A, with a single-stage scroll compressor. It is available while supplies last.

The key question is the indoor coil. It can be reused only if it is R-410A compatible and matched according to the manufacturer; this condensing unit's capacity tables use the ESD4X24M14A1E section. If the coil in place is not suitable, we include its replacement in the same quote, rather than pair two mismatched units.

The same logic applies to the refrigerant piping: this size has a 3/4 in vapor valve and a 3/8 in liquid valve, and we check the diameter and condition of the existing lines before reusing them. And if a reasonable repair is enough to get the old unit running again, we tell you that too.

The data published for this size

The spec sheet, published under the Maratherm brand, another ICP banner, gives a range of 13.4 to 16.0 SEER2 depending on the matched indoor section. There is no certified rating for the condensing unit alone. The published sound power is 74 dBA.

The compressor has an internal pressure relief valve and internal thermal overload, and the unit has a filter drier and a dense wire coil guard. For the electrical side, plan a 208/230 V single-phase circuit with a 15.1 A minimum ampacity and a 25 A maximum time-delay fuse or breaker.

This condensing unit does not heat and, sold alone, it is not eligible for the LogisVert grant. If the furnace is also nearing the end, a central heat pump may be worth comparing.

On installation day
