What it does, in numbers
$30.91
Cooling, all summer
Less than a 60 W light bulb
Bulbs left on day and night for a year. Cooling: 5 h a day for 40 days, the assumption used by Hydro-Québec's air-conditioning calculator. Same calculation for every line: wattage × hours × 11.142 ¢/kWh.
≈$497
Heating, all winter
Typical 625 sq ft room with one exterior wall, in Montréal: 4,464 kWh of heat per winter (Environment Canada 1991–2020 climate normals).
≈ $528 for the year, before tax. Winter is 94% of it. If your home stays in the first tier of Rate D in summer (7.065 ¢/kWh), cooling drops to $19.60.
Capacities and currents: Durastar PTAC/PTHP R-32 submittal, form V1.1_0324 (March 2024). Power draw: 1,387 W in cooling (14,700 BTU/h ÷ EER 10.6), 5,000 W on the 5 kW heater. Hydro-Québec Rate D in effect since April 1, 2026: 11.142 ¢/kWh second tier, before tax.
What you should know about this one
Published, verifiable facts, not brochure claims.
14,700What it really delivers in cooling
The name says 15,000 BTU: that's the unit's size class. Durastar publishes 14,700 BTU/h at 230 V, and 14,500 at 208 V, the supply in many buildings. Better to read it here than on the spec sheet after installation.
5,000 WThe heater that heats the room
The "50" in DRPTAC15Y32501A means a 5.0 kW heater: 5,000 W (15,000 BTU/h) at 230 V, 4,100 W at 208 V, on the 6-30P plug of the LCDI cord supplied. It heats the room all winter.
50.5 dBThe noise at low speed
50.5 dB(A) at low speed, 51 at high speed, as published by Durastar. In a bedroom, that's the number that decides the complaints: the unit runs at night, two metres from the bed.
4.5Pints of water it removes per hour
The dehumidification Durastar publishes in cooling mode: 4.5 pints per hour. It's what keeps a room comfortable in summer without it turning clammy.
62 cfmFresh air through the vent
With the vent open, Durastar publishes 62 cfm of outside air at high speed. Close it to keep all the heat or the cool air in the room.
0 °CRoom freeze protection
In an unoccupied room, Durastar provides automatic freeze protection at 32 °F (0 °C): the fan and the heater restart on their own.
It fits the standard wall sleeve
Durastar designs this PTAC for the standard 42 × 16 in wall sleeve; the sleeve and grille are sold separately. Our estimator checks the ones in place before ordering.
What it needs on site
In a replacement, we check the outlet and the breaker first: they set the heater size you can use. Our estimator confirms the sleeve, the outlet and the slope before ordering.
