A 4-ton air handler for large forced-air homes

Which homes it suits

Four tons is the size for large spaces: two-storey homes with a finished basement, houses extended over the years, homes where the original system has fallen short since a room was added. In Laval and on the North Shore, we see them regularly. Arcoaire’s FJMA4X48L0CB is the 4-ton (48,000 BTU/h) air handler of the FJMA4X series. Installed in the basement, it pushes a published nominal airflow of 1,400 CFM through the ductwork, working with an outdoor unit of the same capacity.

That airflow is of no use if the ducts cannot keep up. Before proposing this size, we measure the main ducts and the return air; when they are undersized, we say so in the quote rather than let the system whistle at the grilles.

A wider cabinet: what it changes

Arcoaire publishes a cabinet 53-7/16 in high, 21-1/8 in wide and 22-1/16 in deep. If your old unit was narrower, the plenum often has to be adapted with a custom transition. It is not a big job, but it has to be planned in the quote, just like the height available below the joists.

On the electrical side, the air handler runs on 208/230 V single phase, 60 Hz, with a 7.6 A minimum circuit ampacity and 15 A maximum overcurrent protection. The liquid connection is 3/8 in (9.5 mm) inside diameter.

Sold alone: what to know

The FJMA4X48L0CB is sold without an outdoor unit. It therefore does not qualify for the LogisVert grant, which follows the certified outdoor unit + air handler pair. For a full replacement, we choose a 4-ton central heat pump or central air conditioner from the manufacturer’s matches, then check the pair’s eligibility.

No heater kit is described for this model in the data we verified. For electric backup heat, we confirm the compatible kit before placing the order.
