Quick facts
R-32 refrigerant is difluoromethane (HFC-32), a pure, single-component refrigerant. It is found in many recent wall-mounted heat pumps and multi-zone systems. We sell it by the cylinder to refrigeration technicians and qualified companies, and our technicians do the charging for other customers.
An A2L refrigerant to handle with the right tools
According to the U.S. EPA, R-32 is an A2L class refrigerant under the ASHRAE 34 standard: low toxicity and low flammability. It requires tools, recovery equipment and methods designed for this type of refrigerant. Its 100-year global warming potential (GWP) is 675, according to Canada’s federal Ozone-depleting Substances and Halocarbon Alternatives Regulations, and its ozone depletion potential is zero.
For units designed for R-32 only
- Check the nameplate: a unit is charged only with the refrigerant listed on it.
- Never mix two refrigerants, and never top up a charge with a different product.
- Weigh in the charge on a scale, to the quantity specified by the manufacturer, after a leak check and evacuation.
Sales restricted to certificate holders
In Québec, the Règlement sur les halocarbures (Q-2, r. 29) governs this refrigerant. Its section 51 requires anyone who sells halocarbons to make sure the buyer holds a workforce environmental qualification certificate, or employs a person who holds one. Its section 43 also reserves the charging, maintenance and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment for qualified persons. We therefore check the certificate before every sale. Without a certificate, leave the charging to our refrigeration technicians.
The safety data sheet is supplied with the cylinder by its manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy R-32 without a certificate?
No. In Québec, section 51 of the Halocarbon Regulation requires the seller to check that the buyer holds an environmental qualification attestation, or employs someone who does. Without one, our technicians do the charge for you.
What does A2L mean?
It is the ASHRAE 34 safety class: lower toxicity (A) and lower flammability (2L). R-32 therefore calls for suitable tools and methods.
Can R-32 go into an R-410A unit?
No. A unit is charged only with the refrigerant listed on its nameplate.
Can you do the charge?
Yes. Our certified technicians do the leak check, the vacuum and a weighed-in charge, everywhere in Greater Montréal.
