Quick facts
R-410A refrigerant is an equal blend of R-32 and R-125 (50/50% by mass, according to the ASHRAE designation). A large number of heat pumps and air conditioners in service run on this refrigerant. We sell it in cylinders to refrigeration technicians and qualified companies for servicing and recharging these units, and our technicians do the charging for other customers.
For units designed for R-410A
According to the U.S. EPA, R-410A is class A1 under ASHRAE Standard 34: low toxicity and no flame propagation. Its global warming potential (GWP) is 2,088 over 100 years, much higher than that of R-32 (675) or R-454B (465). It only goes into a unit whose nameplate specifies it: R-32 or R-454B units do not accept it, and the reverse is also true.
Recharge, yes, but not without repairing
- A tight circuit does not lose refrigerant: before any recharge, find and repair the leak.
- Then perform the pressure test with dry nitrogen and the evacuation.
- Since R-410A is a blend, charge it in the liquid phase and weigh the charge on a scale, according to the manufacturer.
Sale restricted to certificate holders
In Québec, the Règlement sur les halocarbures (Q-2, r. 29) governs this refrigerant. Its section 51 requires anyone who sells halocarbons to make sure the buyer holds an environmental qualification certificate for workers, or employs a person who holds this certificate. Its section 43 also restricts the charging, maintenance and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration units to qualified persons. We therefore check the certificate before every sale. Without a certificate, leave the charging to our refrigeration technicians.
The safety data sheet is supplied with the cylinder by its manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions
My unit is low on refrigerant: should I just top it up?
No. A tight circuit does not lose refrigerant. Find and fix the leak first, then pull a vacuum and weigh in the charge.
Can I buy R-410A without a certificate?
No. In Québec, section 51 of the Halocarbon Regulation requires the seller to check that the buyer holds an environmental qualification attestation, or employs someone who does. Without one, our technicians do the charge for you.
Can R-410A be replaced with R-32 or R-454B?
No. A unit is charged only with the refrigerant listed on its nameplate.
Can you do the repair and the charge?
Yes. Our certified technicians find the leak, fix it, pull the vacuum and do the charge, everywhere in Greater Montréal.
