SoldBy the cylinder

Cylinder oxygen is the oxidizer for the oxy-acetylene torch set. Mixed with acetylene at the torch, it produces a concentrated, very hot flame used for brazing copper refrigerant lines, especially large diameters that need a lot of heat.

A gas that calls for discipline

Oxygen does not burn by itself, but it strongly feeds combustion. That is what makes it useful for brazing, and what calls for strict rules. In contact with oil or grease, pressurized oxygen can cause a fire or an explosion: a greased fitting or oily gloves are enough. For the same reason, oxygen is never used to purge or test a refrigerant line; that job belongs to dry nitrogen.

Good safety practices

  • Use an oxygen regulator and set the working pressure according to the tip and the job.
  • Fit the torch set with check valves and flashback arrestors to prevent a flashback.
  • Keep cylinders, regulators and fittings free of oil and grease.
  • Store oxygen away from fuel gas cylinders, with cylinders secured upright.
  • Remove the regulator and put the valve protection cap back on before moving a cylinder.

The safety data sheet is supplied with the cylinder by its manufacturer. The cylinder size is confirmed with the quote.

01 · What it is for

Half of the oxy-acetylene rig

Oxygen feeds the acetylene flame at the torch and gives a flame hot enough to braze large tube sizes.

  • Brazing copper refrigerant lines with an oxy-acetylene torch
  • Large-diameter joints that need more heat
  • Brazing brass fittings and components, with flux
  • Line repairs on residential and commercial equipment
Hot flameWith acetylene, oxygen gives a concentrated flame that heats the joint fast.
Set at the regulatorWorking pressure is set at the regulator, according to the tip and the job.
Always apartAn oxygen cylinder is stored away from fuel-gas cylinders.

03 · Before installing

What to know before installing

  • No oil or grease ever on an oxygen cylinder, regulator or fitting.
  • Fit the rig with check valves and flashback arrestors.
  • Never use oxygen to purge or test a line: use dry nitrogen.
  • Store oxygen away from fuel gases and secure the cylinder upright.

05 · Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why no oil or grease on oxygen equipment?

Pressurized oxygen strongly feeds combustion: in contact with oil or grease, it can cause a fire or an explosion. Keep cylinders, regulators and fittings clean and dry.

Can a line be purged with oxygen?

No, never. Oxygen in contact with refrigeration oil is an explosion hazard. Purging and pressure testing are done with dry nitrogen.

What else is needed besides the cylinder?

An oxygen regulator, hoses, a torch, check valves and flashback arrestors, plus an acetylene cylinder.

Do you do the brazing for customers?

Yes. Our technicians braze the refrigerant lines on every installation in Greater Montréal.
