Quick facts
R-454B refrigerant is a blend of R-32 and R-1234yf, at 68.9% and 31.1% by mass according to the ASHRAE designation. It is used in a new generation of central heat pumps and air conditioners designed for this refrigerant. We sell it by the cylinder to refrigeration technicians and qualified companies, and our technicians charge it for other clients.
A much lower GWP, an A2L class
According to the U.S. EPA reference table, the global warming potential (GWP) of R-454B is 465 over 100 years, compared with 2,088 for R-410A. The EPA places it in class A2L of the ASHRAE 34 standard: low toxicity and low flammability. It requires tools, recovery equipment and methods designed for A2L refrigerants.
Good charging practice
- Check the nameplate: R-454B goes only into equipment designed for it, never as a replacement for R-410A.
- As with any blend, charging is usually done in the liquid phase, to keep the blend’s proportions: follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Weigh the charge on a scale, after a leak check and evacuation.
Sale limited to certificate holders
In Québec, the Règlement sur les halocarbures (Q-2, r. 29) governs this refrigerant. Its section 51 requires anyone who sells halocarbons to make sure the buyer holds an environmental qualification certificate for workers, or employs a person who holds this certificate. Its section 43 also reserves the charging, maintenance and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment to qualified persons. We therefore check the certificate before every sale. Without a certificate, leave the charging to our refrigeration technicians.
The safety data sheet is supplied with the cylinder by its manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions
Does R-454B replace R-410A in my current unit?
No. R-454B is used in equipment designed for it. An R-410A unit is recharged with R-410A, the refrigerant listed on its nameplate.
Can I buy R-454B without a certificate?
No. In Québec, section 51 of the Halocarbon Regulation requires the seller to check that the buyer holds an environmental qualification attestation, or employs someone who does. Without one, our technicians do the charge for you.
Why charge in liquid phase?
Because R-454B is a blend: charging as a liquid keeps the proportions of its components unchanged. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions.
Can you do the charge?
Yes. Our certified technicians do the leak check, the vacuum and a weighed-in charge, everywhere in Greater Montréal.
