The SENVILLE R454B 36,000 BTU 4-Zone Heat Pump addresses a problem we regularly encounter at AirGreen in homes, condos, duplexes, and small buildings in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the South Shore, and the North Shore: several rooms need independent temperature control, but installing three or four outdoor units on the property would be cumbersome, unattractive, or simply impossible.
The heart of the system is the SENA-36HF-MOA outdoor unit. Its technical specifications indicate that it can supply two to five zones, making it fully compatible with a project involving four indoor units when the selected combination complies with the manufacturer's limits.
This flexibility is particularly valuable in a home with multiple bedrooms, a floor divided into offices, a duplex where certain zones are difficult to balance, or a ground floor and upper floor with very different heating and cooling needs.
Instead of trying to move air from a single wall-mounted head through doors, corridors, and stairways, we can distribute the available capacity directly where it is needed.

The official brochure confirms that the SENA-36HF-MOA has a capacity of 36,000 BTU, a SEER2 of 23, an EER2 of 13, an HSPF2 Region 4 of 10.7, a 208/230 V power supply, and compatibility with 2 to 5 zones.
The brochure shows two zones, but the outdoor unit can support up to five.
The first page of the documentation presents a commercial configuration in dual zone, with two 18,000 BTU indoor units.
This image can be confusing if you look only at the photo.
The most important information is found in the technical table: the SENA-36HF-MOA outdoor model is designed for 2 to 5 zones.
This means that a four-zone system is entirely possible, but the compatible indoor units must be selected and the combinations approved by Senville must be followed.

The system does not automatically divide 36,000 BTU into four fixed 9,000-BTU portions.
Capacity is dynamically shared among the indoor units according to their demands.
The brochure states:
- 36,000 BTU/h of rated cooling capacity;
- cooling range of 9,000 to 43,000 BTU/h;
- 36,000 BTU/h of rated heating capacity;
- heating range of 10,000 to 44,000 BTU/h.
This modulation range allows the inverter compressor to adjust its output.
If only two small bedrooms need cooling, the system can operate at a lower capacity. If several zones require substantial heating at the same time, it increases its output within the available limits.
This is precisely the behavior that makes a multi-zone platform appealing.
A concrete example: four rooms that never have exactly the same needs
Let’s take a typical South Shore home with:
- a primary bedroom on the second floor;
- two secondary bedrooms;
- an office on the ground floor.
The west-facing bedroom can become very hot around 4 p.m. in July, while the north-facing office remains relatively cool.
In the evening, the situation changes: the office is no longer in use, but the three bedrooms need to be comfortable for the night.
A four-zone system concentrates capacity where it is actually needed rather than sending exactly the same amount of air everywhere.
Why four zones can be more effective than one very large head
A common mistake is to believe that a high-capacity wall-mounted unit installed in a hallway can serve an entire floor.
On paper, the BTUs may seem sufficient.
In reality, doors and walls limit air circulation.
A 24,000- or 36,000-BTU head can cool the hallway perfectly while leaving a closed bedroom too warm.

However, this figure should not be turned into a promise about the electricity bill.
Actual consumption depends on:

- window orientation;
- the requested temperature;
- the number of active zones;
- occupancy habits;
- outdoor conditions;
- the quality of the installation.
HSPF2 of 10.7 and operation down to -30 °C
The SENA-36HF-MOA belongs to the Cold Climate system category.
The brochure states that it provides heating down to -30 °C and describes this series as optimized for cold climates.
The AirGreen specifications provide particularly interesting data at winter temperatures:
- approximately 38,000 BTU/h at -8 °C;
- approximately 36,000 BTU/h at -15 °C;
- up to 22,400 BTU/h at -30 °C.
The stated COP is approximately:
- 2.12 at -8 °C;
- approximately 1.47 at -30 °C.
This information is more useful than simply stating “operates down to -30 °C.”
At -30 °C, the system continues to heat, but its available capacity is lower than when the outdoor temperature is higher.
Why multizone heating must be calculated room by room
With a four-zone system, we do not want to know only whether the outdoor unit can produce 22,400 BTU at -30 °C.
We need to determine how these BTUs will be distributed.
If all four rooms require substantial heating at the same time, the total available capacity must be shared.
For an older home in Montreal, with less efficient windows and colder walls, this simultaneity can become important during severe cold.
That is why we assess the heat loss of each zone before recommending the indoor-unit combination.
The major advantage of a four-zone system: individual room control
In a family home, not all rooms should necessarily operate at the same temperature.

This reality is important during the shoulder seasons, particularly in spring or fall, when a sunny room may overheat while another remains cool.
Automatic louvers and air distribution in each room
The AirGreen specification sheet indicates:
- automatic vertical;
- automatic horizontal.
This function improves the distribution of the air stream, but the location of each head remains critical.

- a direct stream of air onto a bed;
- air blowing directly onto a desk;
- a head installed too close to a ceiling;
- a position that blocks the air coverage;
- an installation that makes maintenance more difficult.
In a bedroom, the best position is not always the easiest one for the piping. We therefore need to find a compromise between performance, aesthetics, and route simplicity.
A four-zone installation is won mainly through planning the lines, drains, and outdoor unit.
A precharge of up to 125 feet
The documentation indicates that the SENA-36HF-MOA contains approximately 134.04 oz of R-454B and is precharged for a total length of up to 125 feet.
In a four-zone project, this information is important.
Four heads can quickly generate a significant total piping length.
Suppose:
- 20 feet for the first zone;
- 25 feet for the second;
- 35 feet for the third;
- 30 feet for the fourth.
The total already reaches 110 feet.
That is why we calculate the lengths before installation rather than afterward.
R-454B: a new standard that requires proper installation
The system uses R-454B.
This A2L refrigerant requires appropriate practices during HVAC commissioning and servicing.
A professional installation includes, among other things:
- proper line preparation;
- compliant connections;
- leak tests;
- vacuuming;
- correct charge;
- final operation check.
In a four-zone system, the number of connections is greater than in a single-zone system, making the quality of the refrigeration work even more important.
1/4 in – 1/2 in piping
The AirGreen specification sheet indicates connection sizes of 1/4 in – 1/2 in.
The route must be planned to avoid an accumulation of visible line-hide on the façades.
In an installation in Montréal or Longueuil, we can sometimes group several runs along the same vertical line and then distribute them to the different rooms.
This method often improves the exterior appearance.
Four heads also mean four drains
Each indoor unit produces condensate in cooling mode.
A four-zone system may therefore require up to four separate drainage runs.
It is a detail that quickly becomes critical.
We try to prioritize gravity drains when the configuration allows.
Poor planning may require several condensate pumps, which adds:
- noise;
- mechanical parts;
- maintenance;
- risk of blockages.
In a bedroom, a pump that starts regularly during the night can be much more disruptive than expected.
An outdoor unit weighing more than 200 lb
The brochure specifies for the outdoor unit:

This is therefore not a small outdoor unit.
Its base or support must be suitable for its weight and Québec's winter conditions.

- snow accumulation;
- defrost water;
- distance from windows;
- proximity to the neighbor;
- accessibility for servicing.
65 dB(A): location matters
An outdoor sound level of 65 dB(A) deserves particular attention.
On a property with a large lot, the impact may be limited.
In a densely populated Montréal neighborhood or in certain areas of Longueuil, the distance from windows, patios, and neighbors is often much smaller.
We therefore try to avoid installing it directly beneath a bedroom window or too close to a patio used in the evening.
MCA 37 A and MOP 40 A
The brochure specifies:

The electrical circuit must be sized according to the nameplate data and applicable requirements.

Diagnostics and leak detection
The documentation also presents built-in diagnostic and refrigerant leak detection functions.
On a four-zone system, this function is useful because the refrigeration network has more fittings and components.
However, it does not replace a diagnosis by a refrigeration technician.
A drop in performance in a single zone may be related to:
- a sensor;
- a fan motor;
- an electronic problem;
- a refrigerant charge;
- a fitting;
- a drain;
- a communication error.
The 1,800 sq. ft. area shown in the brochure must be interpreted correctly
The brochure indicates that the SENA-36HF/D configuration can cover up to approximately 1,800 sq. ft.
This information should not be interpreted as an automatic rule.
A well-insulated 1,800 sq. ft. newer home may have a very different heating load from an old duplex of the same size.

Warranty: a difference to be confirmed
The AirGreen product sheet states:
10 years compressor – 10 years parts – 0 years labour, with the possibility of an additional warranty.
However, the Senville brochure indicates 10 years on the compressor and 5 years on parts.
The technical table on page 5 also confirms 10 years compressor / 5 years parts.
This difference must therefore be confirmed according to the warranty program applicable to the product sold by AirGreen.
Four single-zone systems or a four-zone system?
This is a comparison we often make.
Four single-zone systems provide four independent outdoor units.
A multi-zone system uses a single outdoor unit.
Advantages of the four-zone system
- fewer outdoor units;
- better aesthetics;
- less space occupied;
- only one outdoor unit to maintain;
- independent control of the four rooms;

Advantages of separate single-zone systems

The best choice depends on the building and the owner's priorities.
The most common mistake: overloading the indoor capacity because the outdoor unit accepts five zones
The fact that the SENA-36HF-MOA can accept up to five zones does not mean that any combination of heads can be installed.
The matching rules must be followed.
