What “five zones” really means

The outdoor unit does not have five compressors. It has a single capacity source that is distributed among the indoor units according to demand.

This is an essential point.

If five indoor units are installed in five rooms, they do not automatically receive 7,200 BTU each simply because 36,000 divided by five equals 7,200.

The system’s logic is dynamic.

A room that has already reached its setpoint may require very little energy, while an open-concept ground-floor area may require much more capacity. The inverter compressor then adjusts its operating speed within the limits set by the installed combination.

Senville's technical data sheet indicates a cooling range of 9,000 to 43,000 BTU/h and a heating range of 10,000 to 44,000 BTU/h. It also indicates electrical modulation ranging approximately from 600 to 4,000 W in cooling mode and from 600 to 3,750 W in heating mode.

This modulation is what allows a multi-zone system to respond to several varying demands without continuously running the compressor at maximum capacity.

The attached brochure shows a two-zone configuration, but the outdoor unit supports up to five zones

The first page of the provided document presents a commercial combination consisting of two 18,000 BTU indoor units, under reference SENA-36HF-D1818.

This should not be taken to mean that the SENA-36HF-MOA is limited to two indoor units.

The technical table in the same document clearly states:

Number of Zones: 2–5.

This is the outdoor platform of interest here for the 5-zone AirGreen configuration.

However, the brochure does not provide, in the attached pages, the complete list of permitted combinations of five indoor units. We therefore cannot automatically deduce their individual capacities from this document. In an actual project, we verify the exact combination before selecting the five indoor units.

Why five small indoor units can provide better comfort than one large unit

Let us consider a typical two-story house with a basement.

It includes:

  • a large living room and kitchen;
  • a primary bedroom;
  • two other bedrooms;
  • a basement office.

Even if a single 24,000 or 36,000 BTU heat pump has sufficient theoretical capacity for the total area, it cannot efficiently deliver air through multiple doors, corridors, stairwells, and walls.

A 5-zone heat pump addresses the problem differently.

Each area receives its own indoor unit.

In this scenario, a design could assign one indoor unit to the open area, then use units suited to the bedrooms and basement. We do not automatically assign the same capacity to every room: each zone is sized according to its own thermal losses and gains.

A bedroom should not be oversized simply because the outdoor unit is large

This is a mistake we particularly strive to avoid.

If a small bedroom has a low heating and cooling load, installing an unnecessarily large indoor unit can produce shorter cycles and less stable comfort.

The fact that the outdoor unit is capable of 36,000 BTU does not justify installing large indoor units everywhere.

We look at, in particular:

  • area of each zone;
  • number of exterior walls;
  • number of windows;
  • sun exposure;
  • insulation level;
  • ceiling height;
  • the presence of heat-generating equipment;
  • the frequency with which the room is used.

If the house loses 32,000 BTU/h when the outdoor temperature reaches -30 °C, the heat pump can continue to make a significant contribution to heating, but supplemental heating will be needed to make up the difference.

COP 2.12 at -8 °C and COP 1.47 at -30 °C

The COP helps provide a better understanding of what happens with energy consumption.

A COP of 2.12 indicates that under the corresponding conditions, the system provides approximately 2.12 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed.

At -30°C, the published maximum COP drops to 1.47.

The heat pump therefore still has an advantage over electric resistance heating under these conditions, but that advantage is significantly smaller than when the outdoor temperature is less extreme.

This detail is important for homeowners in Laval, Longueuil, Terrebonne, Boucherville, Blainville, or Montreal who want to estimate heating savings. Annual savings must be assessed over an entire season, not only on the coldest days.

Since the capacity at -8°C published on the data sheet is 38,000 BTU/h, this value becomes particularly important when calculating certain financial incentives based on low-temperature performance.

For a five-zone system, however, the certified combination actually installed must be verified. The same outdoor unit may accept several indoor-unit assemblies, and we never assume that all combinations automatically produce the same certification.

The role of AHRI number 215735317

The AirGreen data sheet associates this configuration with AHRI number 215735317.

This is more precise than the general description “Senville 36,000 BTU.”

For a project involving five indoor units, we always want to match:

  • the outdoor unit;
  • the five indoor units;
  • the AHRI combination;
  • low-temperature performance;
  • eligibility for the rebate.

This is a particularly important precaution with a multi-zone system, because a single outdoor unit may serve several different configurations.

Installing five zones correctly: where HVAC expertise becomes decisive

The first challenge is deciding where the five zones begin and end.

Five rooms do not necessarily correspond to five ideal zones.

In an open-concept home, the kitchen, dining room, and living room may behave as one large thermal zone.

Conversely, two bedrooms of the same size can have very different loads if one faces due south and the other due north.

The 1/4 – 1/2 in piping specification should not be applied blindly to all five zones

The AirGreen specifications indicate 1/4 in – 1/2 in piping.

In a multi-zone installation, pipe sizes may depend on the capacity and exact model of each indoor unit.

We therefore do not assume that all five indoor units necessarily use the same diameters.

Each connection must be checked before preparing the job site.

The drains become five separate projects

This is an aspect that is often underestimated.

A five-zone heat pump means up to five units that can produce condensate in cooling mode.

Each indoor unit must have:

  • a properly sized drain;
  • an adequate slope when drainage relies on gravity;
  • an accessible route;
  • backflow protection;
  • a suitable strategy when gravity drainage is not possible.

In some installations in Montreal and Longueuil, drainage issues are more significant than refrigerant piping issues, particularly when several units must be installed on interior walls.

A condensate pump may sometimes be necessary, but we generally favor gravity drainage when the configuration allows it.

  • the required clearances around the outdoor unit.

Why we avoid installing it too close to the ground

A heat pump capable of operating down to -30 °C must physically be able to breathe when it snows.

If the outdoor unit is blocked by 30 or 40 cm of snow, the low-temperature certification does nothing to solve the problem.

We therefore plan for an elevation suited to the site.

During defrosting, the outdoor unit also produces water. This water can freeze beneath the unit and gradually form a significant buildup of ice.

The space beneath the unit must be planned with this reality in mind.

3,037 CFM: the outdoor unit moves a lot of air

The technical table indicates a maximum outdoor airflow of 3,037.2 CFM.

This figure explains why we leave sufficient space around the unit.

65 dB(A): the choice of exterior wall deserves attention

The indicated outdoor sound level is 65 dB(A).

On a detached property with plenty of land, this often offers several placement options.

In a duplex in Montréal or a home close to its neighbors in Laval or Longueuil, we need to pay greater attention to windows, terraces, and surfaces that reflect sound.

Placing the outdoor unit in a narrow corridor between two buildings can result in a very different perception of sound from that experienced in an open area.

Remote control may seem secondary on a single-zone heat pump. With five indoor units, it becomes much more practical.

The documentation highlights smart app control and Alexa integration.

A family can adjust different rooms without walking throughout the house with five remote controls.

This also makes it possible to program a rarely used bedroom differently from the living room or office.

However, WiFi should not be considered a substitute for properly selecting capacities. An improperly sized head will remain improperly sized even with an excellent app.

Leak detection and self-diagnostics

Senville also indicates monitoring and problem-detection functions, including certain refrigerant-related anomalies.

On a five-zone system, this feature can facilitate the initial diagnostic step.

But when only one zone is no longer heating properly, several causes are possible:

  • clogged filter;
  • dirty heat exchanger;
  • drain problem;
  • indoor fan;
  • communication;
  • sensor;
  • refrigerant charge;
  • configuration problem.

The system must therefore be diagnosed as a whole rather than automatically replacing a part on the unit that appears to be causing the problem.

Five zones also mean five units to maintain

The added comfort comes with more maintenance points.

A 5-zone configuration includes:

  • five filters or filter assemblies;
  • five indoor heat exchangers;
  • five fans;
  • five drains;
  • five louver assemblies;

A bedroom unit may remain relatively clean while a head located in an open kitchen accumulates dust and contaminants much more quickly.

The AirGreen specification sheet indicates a manufacturer’s warranty 10-10-0 with an additional warranty possibly available.

However, the attached Senville brochure indicates 10 years on the compressor and 5 years on parts. This information appears clearly in the technical table.

This difference must be confirmed at the time of sale based on the exact product, the installed combination, and the applicable registration requirements.

We prefer to flag this type of discrepancy rather than present a longer warranty without verifying the precise conditions.

When is a SENVILLE 5-zone 36,000 BTU particularly relevant?

We mainly consider this configuration when the property has several separate rooms and the owner wants to avoid installing multiple outdoor units.

It may be particularly suitable for:

  • a large house with enclosed bedrooms;
  • a two-story property with a basement;
  • five areas requiring different settings;
  • a multi-unit property where several spaces need to be conditioned;
  • a house where the exterior aesthetics limit the number of units;
  • a project seeking a cold-climate ENERGY STAR heat pump;
  • a property where operation down to -30 °C is required.

Conversely, it would be unnecessarily complex for a large open-concept area where one or two properly sized units are sufficient.

The main pitfall: wanting to use all five ports simply because they are available

The fact that the outdoor unit supports up to five zones does not mean that five units are always the best solution.

We do not recommend adding a head unit to a room that does not genuinely need one simply to “use all the ports.”

Each additional unit adds:

  • piping;
  • a drain;
  • wiring;
