AMANA PTAC Heat Pump | 9000 BTU | HEH (HIGH EFFICIENCY) R32 J
Is it the right size for this room?
Amana doesn't publish a room size for this unit. From its 9,000 BTU/h of cooling, we estimate ≈ 125 to 185 sq ft. Choose your room's area.
It's the right size.
For a 130 to 175 sq ft room, this is the range we estimate for this unit: 9,000 BTU/h of cooling, 8,200 BTU/h of heat-pump heating and a heater of up to 5,000 W when the cold calls for it.
AirGreen estimate: Amana publishes no room size, so we apply the application ranges Trane publishes for its PTACs of the same cooling capacity. Our estimator confirms the exact area on site.
What it does, in numbers
$15.42
Cooling, all summer
Less than a 60 W light bulb
Bulbs left on day and night for a year. Cooling: 5 h a day for 40 days, the assumption used by Hydro-Québec's air-conditioning calculator. Same calculation for every line: wattage × hours × 11.142 ¢/kWh.
≈$114
Heating, all winter
≈ $10 less than baseboard heaters
Typical 155 sq ft room with one exterior wall, in Montréal: 1,107 kWh of heat per winter (Environment Canada 1991–2020 climate normals). The heat pump is counted only at 8 °C and warmer, where Amana rates its output; below that, the heater, at the price of a baseboard. If it keeps heating in colder weather, the bill goes down.
≈ $129 for the year, before tax. Winter is 88% of it. If your home stays in the first tier of Rate D in summer (7.065 ¢/kWh), cooling drops to $9.78.
Capacities and currents: Amana catalog MC-DPTAC 10-23 (October 2023) and manual IO-933A (December 2022). Power draw: 692 W in cooling (9,000 BTU/h ÷ EER 13.0), 615 W in heat-pump mode, 5,000 W on the 5 kW heater. Hydro-Québec Rate D in effect since April 1, 2026: 11.142 ¢/kWh second tier, before tax.
What you should know about this one
Published, verifiable facts, not brochure claims.
9,000What it really delivers in cooling
The name says 9,000 BTU: that's the unit's size class. Amana publishes 9,000 BTU/h at 230 V and at 208 V, the supply in many buildings: the capacity doesn't drop.
5,000 WThe heater that takes over
At Amana, the two digits after the series letter (the ** in HEH093J**AXXX) set the heater when ordering: 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 or 5.0 kW at 230 V, 1.3 to 4.1 kW at 208 V. At 5.0 kW it takes a 6-30P plug on 30 A; at 3.5 kW, a 6-20P on 20 A. It heats when the heat pump can no longer keep up.
13.0Efficiency above the standard model
Amana publishes an EER of 13.0 for this HEH, against 12.4 for the standard PTH of the same size. For the same capacity, it draws fewer watts in summer, and its COP of 3.9 (against 3.6) trims the winter too.
3.9The COP published at 8 °C
Amana publishes a heat-pump COP of 3.9: 8,200 BTU/h of heat at 230 V. Each kWh you pay for gives back 3.9 in heat, against 1 for the heater or a baseboard.
−7 °CWhen the heat pump hands over
Amana switches the unit from heat pump to the heater when the coil drops below 20 °F (−7 °C), or when the heat pump can't keep up on a two-stage thermostat.
2Pints of water it removes per hour
The dehumidification Amana publishes in cooling mode: 2 pints per hour. It's what keeps a room comfortable in summer without it turning clammy.
7⅝ inHow far it sticks into the room
Amana quotes a 7⅝ in deep front, one of the slimmest in the industry: the unit takes less space out of the room.
4 °CRoom freeze protection
As soon as the unit senses 40 °F (4 °C) or below, it starts the fan and the heater: an empty room won't freeze in winter.
It fits the standard 42 × 16 in sleeve
Amana sleeves have the industry-standard dimensions: 42 in wide, 16 ¹⁄₁₆ in high, 14 ⅛ in deep. Our estimator checks the sleeve and the grille in place before ordering.
What it needs on site
In a replacement, we check the outlet and the breaker first: they set the heater size you can use. Our estimator confirms the sleeve, the outlet and the slope before ordering.

Performance and energy efficiency for your comfort
At AirGreen, we understand that choosing a PTAC heat pump for a residential or commercial environment requires a delicate balance between performance, energy efficiency, and durability. The AMANA | 9000 BTU | HEH (HIGH EFFICIENCY) R32 J PTAC Heat Pump has been designed to meet these requirements with a high level of technological precision, while ensuring optimal comfort in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore.
Exemplary energy efficiency
With an EER of up to 14.0 and a COP of up to 3.9 , this unit is among the most efficient models in its class. These efficiencies can allow owners to benefit from subsidies offered by electricity companies , thus reducing the overall cost of acquisition. The use of R-32 refrigerant is a strategic choice: it has a GWP of 677 , offers up to 12% more efficiency compared to R410A , and uses up to 40% less charge, while reducing the environmental impact.
Silence and interior comfort
The redesigned heat pump includes an indoor tangential fan , two independent motors (indoor/outdoor) and an STC rating of 29 , ensuring quiet operation . Ideal for hotels, student residences, condo buildings or offices, it offers superior acoustic comfort that promotes rest or concentration.
Smart connectivity
The AMANA PTAC integrates Bluetooth® and an RF module, allowing for easy connection to the Amana mobile app (iOS and Android) and Eden Concierge energy management systems. This combination allows:
-
Fast and flexible configuration
-
Advanced diagnostic monitoring
-
A reduction in energy consumption of up to 35% or more when coupled with the Eden Concierge system
Robustness and reliability
Assembled in the USA for over 45 years, AMANA PTAC units undergo extensive factory testing, including leak detection and performance control prior to shipment. The 5-year limited warranty (parts and compressor, some components covered including labor) demonstrates the brand's commitment to quality.
A design thought out for installation and maintenance
Installation flexibility
With a front profile of only 7⅝" depth , the unit maximizes the usable space in the room. It can be installed directly on the floor with no clearance (depending on the accessories chosen), which simplifies integration into tight spaces.
Effective condensation management
The condensate dispersion system projects water directly onto the outdoor coil to accelerate evaporation, improving cooling efficiency and reducing the risk of drips.
Simplified maintenance
The washable air filters are easily accessible from the front. Prompt monthly maintenance extends the unit's life and maintains its efficiency. Additionally, a built-in filter dryer protects the compressor by removing moisture and preventing acid buildup.
Advanced features for optimal control
-
Constant ventilation mode to maintain even air circulation
-
Frost protection that automatically activates the heating when the ambient temperature is ≤ 4°C
-
30-second ventilation delay after compressor stops to release remaining conditioned air
-
Automatic backup heating in case of heat pump system failure
-
Concealed ventilation control to prevent unauthorized tampering
-
Smart Vent and Economizer system to introduce outside air according to thermal and hygrometric conditions
