A fault detected in a modern Montreal duplex
Our AirGreen technicians were called to repair a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump installed in a duplex in the Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighborhood of Montreal. This HVAC system, essential to the comfort of the garden level, was showing signs of intermittent failure : the indoor ventilation was stopping for no apparent reason and the outdoor compressor was no longer responding to the wall control.
The installation, located under a balcony, featured an 18,000 BTU wall-mounted outdoor unit mounted on metal brackets approximately two meters above the ground. Although protected from direct weather, this under-deck position limited airflow—an often underestimated factor in the performance of wall-mounted heat pumps.
Diagnosis: Restricted airflow and compressor overheating
Upon initial inspection, our technician noted heat buildup under the balcony , exacerbated by the lack of space between the wall and the upper deck.
By analyzing the behavior of the system using a digital pressure analyzer , we detected:

High pressure on the discharge side (greater than 425 psi);

An automatic thermal cut-off of the compressor ;

Discharge temperatures above 80°C , which indicated overheating due to poor dissipation.
At the same time, the Sharp electronic control (main PCB) had recorded several thermal overload error codes , preventing automatic restart.
Intervention: restoration of ventilation and refurbishment of wiring
The intervention took place in several stages:

Complete cleaning of the condenser and fins using a biodegradable cleaner under low pressure.

Relocated power cables and corrected an overly tight electrical connection causing signal micro-cuts.

Installation of a custom-made air deflector to redirect the hot flow outside and prevent heat from accumulating under the balcony.

Reset Sharp control module , clear error codes and recalibrate internal thermal sensors.
After this work, the system restarted normally. Pressures stabilized around 360 psi in heating mode, and the indoor discharge temperature increased from 17°C to 42°C in less than 10 minutes.
Result: Restored performance and durability
The customer immediately noticed an improvement in comfort and quietness of operation .
The Sharp heat pump, now properly ventilated and recalibrated, can operate without interruption or risk of overheating.
