The VTAC: an air conditioner and a heat pump in a closet.
VTAC stands for vertical terminal air conditioner. Pick a mode, slide the temperature, tap the numbers.
Cool
Summer: the room’s heat goes outside through the louver. Cool air comes out of the ceiling diffuser.
Tap a number on the drawing to see each part.
Demo: the actual mode also depends on the thermostat and the temperature you want in the room.
Type the model number. We read it with you.
Every character means something: capacity, heat, voltage, refrigerant.
Where to find it: open the closet’s grille door; the number is on the unit’s label. A photo works too.
Same capacity, same heat, same 23 × 23 in base.
Same footprint, four heights: find yours.
Pick the capacity and the built-in heat; the numbers come from the Friedrich spec sheet.
To scale: all four chassis share the same 23 × 23 in base. Only the height changes. The figure is 5 ft 8 in tall.

VTAC, PTAC or wall heat pump: which one fits you?
Pick a question; all three answers change at once.
In a closet, against an outside wall.
You are hereA head on the room’s wall, a compressor outside.

Pick what you see. We’ll tell you straight what to do.
It blows, but doesn’t cool anymore
It needs measuring: filter, coil, refrigerant charge or compressor. If it’s the compressor and the unit is less than 5 years old, the sealed-system warranty may apply; otherwise we compare repair and replacement.

The heat you choose decides the breaker.
The 12,000 BTU unit comes with 2.5 kW, 3.4 kW or 5 kW of electric heat.
Figures: maximum breaker (MOP) at 230 V from the 2023 Friedrich spec sheet. More electric heat means more comfort in extreme cold, but a bigger circuit. We check your panel during the estimate; our electricians do the wiring (RBQ licence 16).
From R-410A to R-32: three generations, same closet.
The chassis and accessories (wall sleeve, louver, grille) keep the same dimensions from one generation to the next. Pick a generation:
Note: the “2” ratings come from a tougher test method. An EER2 of 10.6 does not mean worse than an EER of 11.0.

Bottom line: The compressor, coils and tubing are covered. The other parts (fans, circuit board) no longer are.
R-410A or R-32?
The models in our catalogue (ending in RTP) use R-410A. Friedrich now builds the VERT-I-PAK with R-32 (ending in RCQ), with SEER2 and EER2 ratings.
For you: an R-410A unit can still be repaired. For a new unit, your estimate states in writing which generation we install.
A VTAC cools and heats. To breathe, add an air exchanger.
The VERT-I-PAK’s fresh-air damper lets in 60 CFM at most. Click to see the difference.
The air exchangers we install
A VTAC conditions the air; it barely renews it. An air exchanger removes humidity and stale air and brings in fresh air while recovering the heat. We install both, and we wire them.
See all air exchangersFriedrich for the VTAC, and every brand around it.
For VTACs, it’s Friedrich VERT-I-PAK. For under-window units (PTAC) and ventilation, we install the brands below. Filter:

One unit or the whole building: we handle it from the closet to the electrical panel.
Replacing one unit or a whole building: we come and measure, give you a written price, install and wire. The on-site estimate is free.
