Quick facts
Silver brazing rods supply the filler metal for brazed joints on copper refrigerant lines: fittings, elbows, couplings, tees and repairs. They come in three silver contents, 5%, 15% and 45%, and in three rod diameters.
Choosing the silver content
Rods with 5% and 15% silver handle most copper-to-copper work on heat pumps and air conditioners. The higher the silver content, the more easily the alloy flows into the joint. The 45% rod is used mainly on assemblies where brass or another metal is part of the joint; it is then used with a brazing flux.
Available sizes
- 5% silver, 3/32 in or 1/8 in, 1 lb pack
- 15% silver, 3/32 in or 1/8 in, 1 lb pack
- 45% silver, 1/16 in, 1 oz pack
A thin rod suits small tubing and delicate joints; the 1/8 in rod puts down more metal on large diameters.
Flux or no flux?
In practice, copper-to-copper is brazed without flux using copper-phosphorus alloys, while brass and dissimilar metals require flux. The label on the pack states which metals the rod is for and whether flux is required: the label is what counts. Clean the tube and fitting down to bright metal, heat the joint evenly and braze under a light flow of dry nitrogen, in a ventilated area.

The right rod for each joint
Silver content and diameter depend on the metals being joined and the size of the joint.
- Copper-to-copper joints on liquid and suction lines
- ACR copper fittings, elbows, couplings and tees
- Joining copper to brass or other metals, with flux
- Line repairs and replacing brazed components

What to know before installing
- Read the pack label: it states the metals covered and whether flux is required.
- In practice, copper-to-copper is brazed without flux using copper-phosphorus alloys; brass and dissimilar metals need flux.
- Clean tube and fitting down to bright metal before heating.
- Braze with a light flow of dry nitrogen, in a ventilated area.

Frequently asked questions
Which silver content should I pick?
For copper to copper, 5% or 15% rods do most of the work; more silver makes the alloy flow more easily. The 45% rod is mainly for joints that involve brass or another metal, with flux.
Do I need flux?
For copper to copper with a copper-phosphorus alloy, usually not. As soon as one part is brass or another metal, yes. The pack label is the reference.
Which rod diameter?
A thin rod (1/16 or 3/32 in) for small tubes and delicate joints; the 1/8 in rod for larger sizes, where more filler metal is needed.
Can you do the brazing?
Yes. Our technicians braze and check every refrigerant line joint during installation, everywhere in Greater Montréal.
