Quick facts
Hydronic heating and hot water for the whole house, combined in one 20 kW appliance
A boiler and a water heater in one
Thermo 2000’s ComboMax ULTRA 70 does the job of two appliances. Four 5 kW elements heat the 71 US gal of water in its tank, which supplies your radiant floor, radiators or hydronic baseboards. Parallel copper coils sit in that same water: domestic water flows through them and heats up the moment you open the tap. No hot water is stored, which, according to the manufacturer, reduces the risk of Legionella.
The 20 kW size delivers 68,240 BTU/h at 240 V. On the hot water side, Thermo 2000 publishes 89 US gal in 10 minutes and 186 US gal in one hour, for water delivered at 110 °F from cold water at 40 °F, with boiler water at 180 °F. It suits homes already heated with hot water whose electric boiler and water heater are both reaching the end of their life.
What it changes in a Montreal or South Shore home
In many homes in Montreal, Longueuil and on the South Shore, the mechanical room holds a boiler, a water heater, an expansion tank and a tangle of pipes. The ComboMax takes up the space of a conventional water heater, according to Thermo 2000: 70 1/2 in high and 24 in in diameter. The space freed up becomes storage or clears access to the electrical panel.
The T2 UltraSmart controller, with its backlit display, sets the domestic water temperature and gives priority to hot water as soon as a tap opens. It also runs the heating pump when the thermostat calls for heat. The thermostatic mixing valve comes already mounted on the appliance, as do the pressure regulator with check valve, the air vent and the temperature and pressure gauge.
The electrical side does need preparation: Thermo 2000 specifies a 110 A breaker and Cu 3 or Al 2 wire at 240 V. We check the capacity of the electrical service before recommending this size.
Installation by AirGreen, step by step
It all starts with a free on-site estimate. We look at the existing heating system, the household’s hot water habits, the electrical panel and the location of the old boiler and water heater. You then receive a written quote that specifies the chosen size, the circulator, the expansion tank and the zones to connect.
On installation day, our technicians remove the old electric boiler and water heater, set the ComboMax in place and connect it to the heating system through its 1 1/4 in NPT connections, then to the cold water supply and the hot water distribution through its 3/4 in connections. They make the electrical connection, fill and purge the system, set the controller and check the hot water with you.
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. Thermo 2000, for its part, warrants the tank and coils for 15 years in residential use and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years.
Switch to a single appliance
We install the ComboMax ULTRA in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and on the South Shore. Ask for your free estimate: you receive a detailed written quote, and financing lets you replace the boiler and the water heater in one go.
Home heating and hot water, in one appliance
The ComboMax ULTRA 70-20 heats the water of a hydronic heating system with four 5 kW elements. Copper coils immersed in that water heat the domestic water the moment you open the tap, with no stored hot water.
- Replacing an electric boiler and a water heater that are both at the end of their life
- Homes heated by radiant floors, radiators or hydronic baseboards
- Mechanical rooms where two appliances take up too much space
- Families who take several showers in a row in the morning

What to know before installing
- Dedicated 240 V single-phase circuit: Thermo 2000 specifies a 110 A breaker and Cu 3 / Al 2 wire.
- At 208 V, output and current drop: the manufacturer says to multiply kW by 0.75 and amps by 0.867.
- Plan room for an appliance 70 1/2 in high and 24 in in diameter. It weighs 430 lb, plus the water in the tank once filled.
- Maximum working pressure of 30 psi (207 kPa) on the heating side and 125 psi on the domestic water side.
- The circulator, expansion tank and heating zones are chosen for your installation: we specify them in the written quote.
- 30 psi heating relief valve
- 125 psi domestic hot water relief valve
- Drain valve (tank and heat exchanger)
- Temperature and pressure gauge
- Automatic air vent
- 12 psi pressure regulator and check valve (ASSE 1012 / CSA B64-3)
- Thermostatic mixing valve

Frequently asked questions
Does the ComboMax replace my water heater?
Yes. Domestic water is heated by the copper coils immersed in the heating water, as you use it. For this model, Thermo 2000 publishes 89 US gal in 10 min and 186 US gal in 1 h, at 110 °F. The space taken by the old water heater is freed up.
How quickly does hot water arrive?
The manufacturer states domestic hot water in less than 7 seconds. At the tap, the delay also depends on the length of piping between the appliance and the bathroom.
What electrical protection is needed?
Thermo 2000 specifies a 110 A breaker at 240 V and Cu 3 or Al 2 wire. That is a large load: we check the electrical service and the panel during the free estimate.
How does it differ from the 20 kW ComboMax ULTRA 50?
The output is the same. The 50 version has a 48 US gal tank, the 70 version a 71 US gal tank: it keeps a larger volume of heating water around the coils, in a taller and heavier appliance.
What warranty does Thermo 2000 offer?
Thermo 2000 warrants the tank and coils for 15 years in residential use (10 years in commercial use) and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years.
