A service call on a residential flat roof
It was in Rosemère , on the North Shore of Montreal , that our AirGreen team was asked to work on a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump installed on the flat roof of a residential building. This type of installation, common in multi-unit buildings, presents specific challenges related to direct exposure to the elements and the management of condensate drainage.
The context: loss of performance and unusual vibrations
The customer noticed a decrease in heating efficiency over the past few weeks, combined with a noticeable metallic vibrating noise on the roof, especially during startup. These symptoms indicated possible mechanical wear or internal misalignment of the fan —typical problems for units exposed to the freeze-thaw cycles of the Quebec spring.
Complete inspection and diagnosis
Upon arrival, we secured the area and performed a complete diagnostic of the Sharp DC Inverter system. Here are the main steps:
-
Visual inspection of the outdoor unit: no major obstructions, but accumulation of debris around the support and the condensate tray.
-
Checking the level and stability of the support : slight sagging on one side due to the settling of the insulating material under the structure (Isofoam).
-
Electrical analysis : voltages and currents compliant, no short circuits detected.
-
R-32 refrigerant pressure measurement : slight undercharge, probably caused by a microleak.
-
Mechanical check : Fan rotor slightly misaligned, causing the reported noise.
This diagnosis made it possible to establish a clear list of interventions to be carried out to restore the performance and reliability of the system.
Steps of repair
Our certified technicians carried out a complete repair , step by step:
-
Upgraded the heat pump support , with the addition of additional structural insulation under the wood rails to stabilize the base.
-
Straightening and balancing the outdoor fan , followed by a frictionless rotation test.
-
Leak detection test on refrigeration connections using an A2L electronic detector compatible with R-32 refrigerant.
-
Corrective solder on a suspect weld and nitrogen pressure test at 350 psi .
-
Complete vacuum to eliminate all moisture in the circuit.
-
Recharge the system with R-32 refrigerant , according to Sharp brand specifications.
-
Complete performance test in heating and cooling mode.
After these adjustments, the heat pump regained perfect mechanical stability and thermal efficiency in line with the manufacturer's original values.
Results: comfort and durability guaranteed
The Sharp heat pump began operating smoothly and quietly again, with renewed efficiency. The interior temperature of the home quickly stabilized, and measured energy consumption decreased by approximately 15% compared to the period before the repair.
We also recommended to the owner:
-
Perform a complete cleaning of the coils at the end of each season.
-
Have the support level checked every spring.
-
Schedule annual preventative maintenance before summer to maintain peak performance of the inverter compressor.
