AprilAire humidifiers: the right model depends on your house
AprilAire has made whole-home humidifiers since 1954. AirGreen sells seven: bypass (400, 500, 600), fan-powered (700), steam (800, 865) and self-contained (300). Three things decide the model: your ductwork, your drain and your electrical circuit.
Find your AprilAire in 3 questions
An evaporative model: 600, 700 or 500
With a drain and no 240 V circuit, the 600 and 700 give the most: 17 and 18 gal/day (the 700 with no bypass duct, but on 120 V). The 500 (12 gal/day) suits a small plenum. The 800 also runs on 120 V, at 11.5 or 16 gal/day.
The most output: the 800 steam unit
With a drain and a 240 V circuit, the 800 gives up to 34.6 gal/day (16 A), and its output does not depend on how warm the plenum air is. The water-panel models remain options: 600 (17 gal/day) or 700 (18).
With no drain, one AprilAire fits: the 400
The 400 uses all the water it takes in: no drain needed, only a safety overflow connection. 17 gal/day, up to 5,000 sq ft in a tight home according to AprilAire. The other forced-air models (500, 600, 700, 800) need a drain.
No ducts, on 120 V: the 300 or the 865
The 300 gives 13 gal/day with its own blower, provided there is hot water at 120 to 140 °F. The 865 runs on 120 V at 11.5 or 16 gal/day, with cold water.
No ducts, on 240 V: the 865
The 865 is the 800’s steam blown into the house by a wall fan pack: up to 34.6 gal/day at 240 V and 16 A, with cold water and a drain. The 300 remains an option if hot water is available.
No ducts and no drain: to be checked on site
The 865 steam unit needs a drain. The 300 needs hot water at 120 to 140 °F and a 120 V supply. Our estimator looks at what the house allows before suggesting a model.
No ducts and no drain: to be checked on site
The 865 steam unit needs a drain. The 300 needs hot water at 120 to 140 °F and a 120 V supply. Our estimator looks at what the house allows before suggesting a model.
A first pass, not a quote: our estimator confirms the model on site.
01 The 500 → 865 ladder
What each step adds
Tap a model: its output, what it needs in your house and what it adds over the one before. The 400 is not “above” the 600: it does the same job without a drain. The 300 sits apart, for homes without forced air.

AprilAire 500
120 °F plenum, blower running, cold water
The starting point: 12 gal/day, with the smallest plenum opening in the range: 9½ × 9½ in. It connects to a 6 in. bypass duct and sends surplus water to the drain.
- Type

AprilAire 400
120 °F plenum, blower running, cold water
Compared with the 600: the same output (17 gal/day) and the same area, in a cabinet of the same size, but with no drain: it uses all the water it takes in. The trade-off: its two Water Panel 45s are replaced twice per season.
- Type
- Drainless bypass (Water Saver)
- Area per AprilAire
- Up to 5,000 sq ft in a tight home
- Water and drain
- No drain: it uses 100% of the water it takes in
- Electrical
- 24 V, 0.5 A
- Control supplied
- Model 60, automatic
- Consumable

AprilAire 700
120 °F plenum, blower running, cold water
Compared with the 600: 1 more gal/day (18) and up to 5,300 sq ft in a tight home. Its fan pulls air straight from the furnace: no bypass duct to install, but it needs a 120 V supply.
- Type
- Fan-powered
- Area per AprilAire
- Up to 5,300 sq ft in a tight home
- Water and drain
- Drain required (3 gal/h water feed, AprilAire submittal 12.22)
- Electrical
- 120 V, 0.8 A (fan) + 24 V
- Control supplied

AprilAire 800
at 240 V and 16 A
Compared with the 700: steam. Up to 34.6 gal/day at 240 V and 16 A, with an output set by the electrical circuit, not by how warm the plenum air is. It needs a 120, 208 or 240 V circuit, cold water and a drain.
- Type
- Electrode steam, in the ductwork
- Area per AprilAire
- AprilAire publishes no square footage for its steam models
- Water and drain
- Cold water only; 7/8 in. drain
- Electrical
- 120, 208 or 240 V; 11.5 or 16 A (1.4 to 3.8 kW)

- Consumable
- Model 80 canister once a year; electrode wires every 3 years

AprilAire 865
at 240 V and 16 A
Compared with the 800: the same steam generator, packaged with a wall-recessed fan pack. The steam is blown straight into the house: no furnace and no ductwork needed. Same output table as the 800.
- Type
- Ductless steam, with fan pack
- Area per AprilAire
- AprilAire publishes no square footage for its steam models
- Water and drain
- Cold water only; drain
- Electrical
- Same as the 800; 24 V fan pack

AprilAire 300
with 80 ft of effective duct
Set apart from the ladder: a self-contained evaporative humidifier with its own blower, for homes without a forced-air furnace. 13 gal/day (rated with 80 ft of effective duct), hot water at 120 to 140 °F required, 120 V supply.
- Type
- Self-contained evaporative, no forced air
- Area per AprilAire
- Up to 3,900 sq ft in a tight home; 2,000 sq ft with average construction
- Water and drain
- Hot water required, 120 to 140 °F
- Electrical
- 120 V, 0.7 A; 270 CFM blower
- Control supplied
- Model 65, digital manual
- Consumable
- Water Panel 35
The areas are the ones AprilAire publishes for a tight home. AprilAire rates its water-panel models with a 120 °F plenum, the blower running and cold water; its 700 submittal notes that a cooler plenum can reduce evaporative capacity.
02 Steam: 800 and 865
With steam, the electrical circuit sets the output
The 800 and 865 boil water in an electrode canister. Pick the voltage and current: the output comes from AprilAire’s table (spec sheet 01.26).
120 V and 11.5 A: 1.4 kW according to AprilAire.
120 V and 16 A: 1.9 kW according to AprilAire.
208 V and 11.5 A: 2.4 kW according to AprilAire.
208 V and 16 A: 3.3 kW according to AprilAire.
240 V and 11.5 A: 2.8 kW according to AprilAire.
240 V and 16 A: 3.8 kW according to AprilAire.
The water-panel models (700, 600, 500) are rated with a 120 °F plenum: their real output can drop when the air is cooler. The 800 or 865 setting is chosen at the quote stage to suit your electrical panel.
AprilAire’s table
| Voltage | 11.5 A | 16 A |
|---|---|---|
| 120 V | 11.5 gal/d · 1.4 kW | 16 gal/d · 1.9 kW |
| 208 V | 20.5 gal/d · 2.4 kW | 30 gal/d · 3.3 kW |
| 240 V | 23.3 gal/d · 2.8 kW | 34.6 gal/d · 3.8 kW |
Cold water only, conductivity 125 to 1,250 µS/cm, pressure 25 to 120 psi; the 800LC is made for softer water.

No drain?
Among the forced-air models, only the 400 does without one: it uses all the water it takes in.
No ducts?
The 865 (steam, wall fan pack) or the 300 (self-contained evaporative, hot water) humidify a house with no forced-air furnace.
Tight space around the plenum?
The 700 has no bypass duct; the 500 needs the smallest opening (9½ × 9½ in.).

09 FAQ
Common questions about AprilAire
Which AprilAire goes with a central heat pump?
AprilAire rates its water-panel models with a 120 °F plenum, and its 700 submittal notes that a cooler plenum can reduce evaporative capacity. The 800 steam unit’s output depends on the electrical circuit, not on how warm the air is. Our estimator looks at your system before suggesting a model.
There is no drain near my furnace. What can I do?
The 400 is the drainless AprilAire: it uses all the water it takes in. The other forced-air models (500, 600, 700, 800) need a drain.
My house has no ductwork. Is an AprilAire possible?
Yes: the 865 blows steam into the house through a wall fan pack, and the 300 is a self-contained evaporative unit that needs hot water at 120 to 140 °F.
How many square feet does an AprilAire cover?
According to AprilAire, in a tight home: 3,600 sq ft for the 500, 5,000 for the 400 and 600, 5,300 for the 700, 3,900 for the 300 (2,000 with average construction). AprilAire publishes no area for the 800 and 865.
What is the difference between the 400 and the 600?
Same output (17 gal/day) and a cabinet of the same size. The 600 sends surplus water to the drain and uses one Water Panel 35; the 400 has no drain and uses two Water Panel 45s, replaced twice per season.
Which control comes with each model?
Model 60 with the 400, 500, 600 and 700; Model 62 with the 800; Model 65 with the 865 and the 300. The Model 76 controls AprilAire dehumidifiers.
How often do I replace the panel or the canister?
According to AprilAire: twice per season for the 400’s Water Panel 45s, once per season for the 600’s Panel 35, once a year for the 800 and 865 Model 80 canister, and new electrode wires every three years.
What is the AprilAire warranty?
Five years from installation on parts, no labour, water panel excluded, provided the unit is installed by a qualified heating and air-conditioning contractor (AprilAire owner’s manual, 2016).
Is there a grant for a humidifier in 2026?
No. LogisVert, Rénoclimat and Énergir do not cover whole-home humidifiers, the federal programs do not mention them, and Chauffez vert ended on March 31, 2026 (checked October 20, 2026).
Are AprilAire humidifiers ENERGY STAR?
ENERGY STAR has no category for whole-home humidifiers, and AHRI has no certification program for them.
Is my old AprilAire 800 part of a recall?
AprilAire shows a recall notice on its 800 page for steam humidifiers made from June 2010 to January 2015. Check your serial number with AprilAire.
How much does an installed AprilAire humidifier cost?
The price is on quotation: it depends on the model, the ductwork, the drain, the water and the electrical circuit. Our estimator’s visit is free.
