The MWPD heats down to -20.6 °C. How many Montréal nights go colder?

LENNOX publishes a heating range of -5 to 75 °F for the MWPD, i.e. -20.6 to 24 °C. At Montréal-Trudeau, about 12 nights a year drop below -20 °C, 6.7 of them in January on average. Down to its limit, the 12,000 still gives 12,100 BTU/h in the LENNOX table; its certified rating at -15 °C is 9,000 BTU/h. We show you, month by month, when your backup heat takes over.

The nights come from the Montréal-Trudeau climate normals. The heat comes from the LENNOX technical table (form 211081) and the certified rating. Pick the month, the heating already in place and the size.

January at Montréal-Trudeau

6.7nights below -20 °C

On average, out of 31 nights (1991-2020 normals). It is a ceiling: Environment Canada counts nights below -20 °C, and the MWPD range goes down to -20.6 °C.

Over the year: about 12 nights below -20 °C, almost all from December to March.

Your baseboards take over

Below -20.6 °C you are outside the heating range LENNOX publishes for the MWPD: on those nights you count on your baseboards. In January, that is at most 6.7 nights on average.

The other nights of the month stay above -20 °C, inside its range.

Three things the LENNOX documents say about the MWPD

MWMD

The MWPD and the MWLD take the same indoor head

The LENNOX installation manual lists them side by side, with the same MWMD heads from the 9,000 to the 24,000. Same head, same certified ratings at the same size: what changes is the outdoor unit.

LENNOX, installation manual (December 2024), p. 9; forms 211080 and 211081.
= MWLD

From the 15,000 to the 24,000, its heating table is the MWLD’s

In the LENNOX sheets, the 15,000, 18,000 and 24,000 MWPD give exactly the same heat as the MWLD of the same size, from -20.6 to 24 °C. Only the 9,000 and the 12,000 differ a little: at -20.6 °C, 12,100 BTU/h for the 12,000 MWPD against 12,300 BTU/h for the MWLD.

LENNOX, forms 211080 and 211081, p. 14-18.
-10 °C

It cools from -10 °C outdoors; the MWLD, from -18 °C

The MWPD cooling range starts at 14 °F (-10 °C); the MWLD’s, at 0 °F (-18 °C). The difference only matters if a room has to be cooled in the middle of winter.

04 · LogisVert

LogisVert: an indicative amount per size, and the gap with the MWHD

Amounts from our product pages, matching Hydro-Québec’s list at our last check (list of October 6, 2026). Under each MWPD, the amount of the MWHD of the same size. These are indicative amounts. Only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted.

What the LogisVert guide says

  • The amount is based on the certified capacity at -8 °C: $120 per 1,000 BTU/h for a cold-climate unit, $50 for a standard one.
  • At our last check, the MWPD amounts followed the first rate and the MWHD amounts the second: that is the gap on each line.
  • Outdoor unit of at least 12,000 BTU/h nominal.
  • At most 100% of the purchase and installation cost, before taxes.
  • Apply no later than nine months after installation.
  • Residential only: commercial spaces are excluded.

06 · Questions

What people ask us about the MWPD

Is -20.6 °C enough for Montréal?

For almost all of winter, yes. At Montréal-Trudeau, about 12 nights a year drop below -20 °C (1991-2020 normals), 6.7 of them in January on average. On those nights you are outside the range LENNOX publishes for the MWPD: keep a backup heat source, baseboards or a furnace.

What does the MWPD do below -20.6 °C?

LENNOX publishes a heating range of -5 to 75 °F (-20.6 to 24 °C) and a heat table that stops at -5 °F. Below that, LENNOX gives no figure. So we don’t count on it on those nights, and we plan the backup.

Why -20.6 °C, and not a round number?

LENNOX publishes the limit in Fahrenheit: -5 °F. Converted, that is -20.6 °C, the figure LENNOX also prints on the 18,000 MWPD submittal sheet. That is the one we keep.

And if I have no other heating?

Look at the MWLD: LENNOX gives it a heating range down to -30 °C. At Montréal-Trudeau, a night below -30 °C comes about once every five years (0.21 a year).

Does the MWPD have a base pan heater?

The LENNOX MWPD sheet does not mention one, and its NEEP record declares none. If ice in the base of the outdoor unit worries you, the MWLD is the one that has it.

What warranty in Québec?

The LENNOX EW900011-01 extended warranty gives the MWPD 12 years on parts and 12 years on the compressor in total, with no registration in Québec. It stays with the original owner. Labour is not covered by LENNOX.

Can I control it from the wall?

Yes. The MWMD head has built-in Wi-Fi and comes with its wireless remote. LENNOX also offers wired wall controls (VSTAT02P-1 touchscreen or VSTAT04P-1 programmable, with the VSTAT06P-1 board) and a 24 V thermostat adaptor (VSTAT09P-1). We see at the visit what suits your home.

Which size for my room?

That gets decided at your place, not over the phone. We look at the room, the insulation, the windows and the heating already in place, then we suggest the size. The estimate is free.
