Quick facts
72 kW on 240 V three-phase, metered from 0 to 100% to spare the electrical service
A commercial boiler for buildings on 240 V three-phase
The VoltMax SCR 72 is the 72 kW version of Thermo 2000’s commercial electric boiler, here on 240 V three-phase (manufacturer designation: VOLTMAX SCR 72-240-3 PH). It produces 245,664 BTU/h and heats the water in a closed loop: radiators, a radiant floor, the hot-water coils of an air handling unit or an indirect water heater.
It is meant for owners of apartment buildings, managers of offices or shops, and contractors working in buildings with a 240 V three-phase electrical service. It is chosen for new construction or to replace a commercial electric boiler that is reaching the end of its life.
What 240 V three-phase changes in your building
At 240 V, a 72 kW boiler draws a lot of current: Thermo 2000 lists 173.2 A. That is the first thing we look at in a Plateau building in Montreal or a small commercial building in Longueuil: the capacity of the service, the free space in the panel, the conductor run to the mechanical room.
SCR modulation helps on exactly that point. Instead of switching its elements on in blocks, the boiler adjusts its output from 0 to 100% through solid-state relays, on top of its relay stages, and the manufacturer states that this approach limits peak power. On a mild autumn day, it supplies only what the loop asks for; in deep cold, it ramps up gradually to its full 72 kW.
The backlit Schneider Electric controller adjusts water temperature from the supplied outdoor sensor, accepts a setpoint from 50 °F to 200 °F and can follow schedules. If the building has a central management system, it communicates over BACnet IP or MS-TP, or takes a 0-10 Vdc signal for setpoint and output. The Ethernet port gives access to a web page and sends alarms by email.
Installation by AirGreen, from site survey to commissioning
Everything starts with a free on-site estimate. We check the 240 V three-phase service, the existing loop and the mechanical room, then give you a written quote that details the boiler and what has to be added around it: circulator, expansion tank and, if needed, an indirect water heater, since these parts are not on the list Thermo 2000 supplies.
On installation day, our crews set the boiler in place within the manufacturer’s clearances (3 in on the sides and back, 24 in in front, 32 in above), connect the piping to the 1 1/2 in NPT side connections, wire the three-phase supply, mount the outdoor sensor, fill and purge the loop, then set up the controller with you. Thermo 2000 covers the tank for 10 years (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years.
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years. We hold RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work, which lets us handle the boiler’s electrical connection.

Hot-water heating for a building on 240 V three-phase
The VoltMax SCR 72 heats the water in a closed loop that serves radiators, a radiant floor, hot-water coils or an indirect water heater. Thermo 2000 designs it for commercial and institutional buildings; this version is for those with a 240 V three-phase electrical service.
- Hydronically heated apartment buildings with a 240 V three-phase service
- Small commercial buildings: shops, offices, clinics
- Replacing a commercial electric boiler at the end of its life
- Loops that also feed an indirect water heater, through the controller’s second setpoint

What to know before installing
- 240 V three-phase, 60 Hz power supply and a current of 173.2 A: we check the capacity of the electrical service and panel before we quote.
- Clearances required by Thermo 2000: 3 in on the sides and back, 24 in in front, 32 in above, none at the floor.
- The circulator and expansion tank are not on Thermo 2000’s list of supplied components: we size them for the loop and list them in the quote.
- The 10-year tank warranty applies to closed-loop heating, under Thermo 2000’s terms.
- 240 V three-phase version: the VoltMax SCR series also comes in 208 V, 480 V and 600 V.
- Schneider Electric controller
- Outdoor temperature sensor
- ON/OFF control switch
- Control and power fuses and breakers
- SCR relays
- Two limit controls, automatic and manual reset
- Factory-installed relief valve

Frequently asked questions
My building is on 240 V three-phase. What current should I plan for?
Thermo 2000 lists 173.2 A for the VoltMax SCR 72 on 240 V three-phase. During the free estimate, we check the capacity of the service and panel to confirm the building can supply it.
Why SCR modulation rather than simple stages?
Solid-state relays (SCR) adjust output from 0 to 100% with demand, on top of the relay stages. The boiler draws only the power it needs, which limits the peak, according to the manufacturer.
Can it heat domestic water?
Indirectly. The controller offers a second setpoint for an indirect water heater and a pump contact with or without domestic hot water priority. The indirect water heater is ordered separately.
What does Thermo 2000’s warranty cover?
The tank is covered for 10 years (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years, parts and accessories.
Can you install it?
Yes. We set the boiler in place, connect it to the loop and to the 240 V three-phase service, install the outdoor sensor, then fill, purge and set up the controller.
