What the commercial BTH ULTRA 18 is
Thermo 2000’s BTH ULTRA 18 is an 18 kW wall-mounted electric boiler, or 61,416 BTU/h, designed for a 600 V three-phase supply. Its six 3 kW elements, rated for 347 V, are grouped in two stages. It belongs to the commercial BTH ULTRA line, offered at 480 V and 600 V, which Thermo 2000 designs for commercial and institutional buildings, in new construction as well as replacement.
This size is aimed at buildings whose hot water loop calls for mid-range output: the common areas of a building supplied at 600 V, a business or offices heated by radiant floors, an institutional building with radiators. It can also back up a geothermal system or a heat pump.
Two stages to follow demand
A commercial building does not need the same heat on a January Monday morning as on an April afternoon. With two stages, the boiler does not have to run at full output when demand drops: the T2 UltraSmart controller modulates output based on the loop’s needs. The supplied outdoor sensor also lets it set the water temperature on one of three curves (MIN, STD, MAX), and warm weather shutdown rests the unit in the shoulder seasons.
The controller also offers a backlit display, presets by distribution system, Boost mode, pump purge and a 24 V supply for the thermostat and accessories. Two high limits, automatic at 208 °F (98 °C) and manual at 227 °F (108 °C), protect the boiler.
A three-phase supply that is simple to plan
At 600 V, the BTH ULTRA 18 draws 17.3 A. Thermo 2000 lists a 30 A breaker and copper or aluminum wire gauge 10. Wall-mounted, it weighs 75 lb, holds 3 US gallons of water and connects with 1 1/4 in female NPT fittings, with two reducers supplied.
