The N4A4S48AKANA, for large living spaces

A large single-family or intergenerational home, served by a single duct system, may need 4 tons of cooling. The N4A4S48AKANA is the outdoor unit of that size in Arcoaire’s N4A4S series: 48,000 BTU/h nominal, R-410A refrigerant, single-stage scroll compressor, single-speed fan and filter drier. The galvanized steel cabinet has a baked-on powder coat finish.

Arcoaire publishes a range of 13.4 to 15.2 SEER2 for this size depending on the matched indoor unit. The coil chosen for the electric furnace or air handler therefore determines where the system falls within that range. That coil is not included, and the heating does not change: it is still provided by the electric furnace or by the air handler fitted with a heating element.

Sound: 76 dBA, or 74 dBA with a sound shield

A 4-ton system moves a lot of air, and its outdoor unit can be heard. Arcoaire publishes a sound power of 76 dBA for this size, and 74 dBA with a sound shield. If the unit has to sit near a deck, a pool or the neighbouring house, both values deserve attention when choosing the location. The allowed lines, up to 250 ft (76.20 m) of total equivalent length, give some leeway.

To check at your home

• A 208-230 V single-phase circuit, 24.5 A minimum circuit ampacity, fuse or breaker of 40 A maximum.
• A coil and an air handler or electric furnace able to deliver the airflow of a 4-ton system.
• Lines at 3/8 in (liquid) and 7/8 in (vapor); 80 ft (24.4 m) maximum if the evaporator is above the unit.

Availability, grant and warranty

Arcoaire states that the N4A4S series is no longer in production: quantities are limited, hence the value of planning the replacement in the spring. The unit is cooling only and, sold alone, it does not qualify for the LogisVert grant. The manufacturer’s parts limited warranty is 10 years for the original owner with registration within 90 days of installation, otherwise 5 years; according to the certificate, in Quebec it cannot depend on registration.
