Quick facts
A 1.5-ton central air conditioner to cool a small house without touching your heating
What the N4A5S18AKAWA is, and who it suits
The N4A5S18AKAWA is the outdoor unit, the condensing unit, of the Arcoaire Performance N4A5S series, in its smallest size: 1.5 tons, or 18,000 BTU/h. It does one thing, cooling. It does not heat. It works with an indoor section, a coil on top of an electric furnace or a fan coil, which pushes the cooled air through your ductwork.
This size mostly suits modest bungalows, townhouses and condos that already have ductwork, where a larger unit would short-cycle. The single-stage scroll compressor, housed according to Arcoaire in an extra-thick shell, runs on R-410A. For this size, the manufacturer's spec sheet publishes a range of 14.3 to 16 SEER2: the actual rating depends on the matched indoor section.
How it fits a Quebec home
Many houses in Montreal, Laval and Longueuil are heated by an electric furnace and have never had central air. The N4A5S18AKAWA is added without changing the heating: we install a coil on top of the furnace, connect the two units with the refrigerant piping, and the existing ductwork delivers the cool air to the rooms.
On the electrical side, the demand stays modest. The spec sheet lists a minimum circuit ampacity of 11.4 A and a 20 A maximum time-delay fuse or breaker, at 208/230 V single phase. On a panel that is already well filled, that detail often keeps the project simple. The unit can also sit well away from the house: the manufacturer allows up to 250 ft of equivalent piping length, following its long-distance guidelines.
One point to keep in mind: this is a cooling-only unit. Sold alone, it is not eligible for the LogisVert grant. If you also want to heat with the same system, a central heat pump is the option to compare, and we can present both.
What installation by AirGreen covers
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. Before proposing anything, we come and see the house.
- Free on-site estimate, then a detailed written quote;
- Choice of the matched indoor section based on your furnace or fan coil;
- Outdoor unit set on a stable pad, with the clearance the manufacturer requires;
- Refrigerant piping connection, evacuation and charge check;
- Electrical connection, testing and commissioning.
We work across Greater Montreal, including the North Shore and the South Shore. The unit's dimensions are published only on a drawing: we confirm them with you before preparing the pad, to avoid surprises on installation day.

The outdoor half of a 1.5-ton central air system
The N4A5S18AKAWA sits outside and rejects the heat removed from the house. Indoors it needs a matched section: a coil on top of an electric furnace, or a fan coil. The manufacturer builds its capacity tables with the ESD4X24M14A indoor section.
- Adding central air to a house heated by an electric furnace
- Modest bungalows, townhouses and condos that already have ductwork
- Replacing a worn-out 1.5-ton condensing unit on existing ductwork
- Electrical panels with little room left for a new circuit

What to know before installing
- Cooling only: the unit does not heat. Sold alone: not eligible for the LogisVert grant.
- The indoor section (coil or fan coil) is not included: we choose it from the matches the manufacturer publishes.
- 208/230 V single-phase, 60 Hz power supply, protected by a 20 A maximum time-delay fuse or breaker.
- Cooling below 55°F (12.8°C) outdoors requires a low-ambient pressure switch; the limit is 0°F (-18°C) with the approved kits.
- Dimensions and weight appear only on the spec sheet drawing: we confirm them before preparing the pad.

Frequently asked questions
Does this air conditioner heat the house?
No. The N4A5S18AKAWA is cooling only; heating stays with your electric furnace or current system. Sold alone, it is not eligible for the LogisVert grant.
What indoor equipment does it work with?
A cooling coil on top of an electric furnace, or a fan coil. The manufacturer's capacity tables use the ESD4X24M14A indoor section. We confirm the match before ordering.
What efficiency can I expect?
Arcoaire publishes 14.3 to 16 SEER2 for this size. The outdoor unit alone has no certified rating: the value depends on the matched indoor section.
Do I need a new electrical panel?
Not necessarily. The spec sheet lists a minimum circuit ampacity of 11.4 A and a 20 A maximum time-delay fuse or breaker at 208/230 V. We check the room left in your panel during the estimate.
What warranty does the manufacturer offer?
The ICP limited warranty certificate covers parts for 10 years for the original owner if the unit is registered within 90 days of installation, otherwise 5 years; the certificate states that this registration condition does not apply in Quebec. Subsequent owners: 5 years. Labour is not covered by the manufacturer.
