Quick facts
The house got bigger: 4 tons of central air to keep up
A size for houses that have changed
An addition at the back, a storey added, an intergenerational unit set up in the basement: the house has grown, but the air conditioner has stayed the same. As a result, it runs nonstop in July and some rooms never really cool down. The N4A5S48AKAWA, the 4-ton (48,000 BTU/h) outdoor unit of the Arcoaire Performance N4A5S series, answers that kind of situation, provided the ducts keep up.
The unit runs on R-410A, with a single-stage scroll compressor. It cools only and needs a matched indoor section, a coil on an electric furnace or a fan coil. The manufacturer's capacity tables use the EVD4X48M21A section.
What the spec sheet says for this size
For 4 tons, Arcoaire publishes a range of 13.8 to 15 SEER2 depending on the matched indoor section; the condensing unit alone has no certified rating. Sound power is 76 dBA, or 74 dBA with sound shield. On the electrical side, it needs a 208/230 V single-phase circuit with a 32.8 A minimum ampacity and a 50 A maximum time-delay fuse or breaker.
A detail we point out: the spec sheet gives exactly the same electrical values for this size and the 42,000 BTU/h size, in both of its editions. We do not draw conclusions lightly: we read the nameplate of the delivered unit before connecting the circuit.
Finally, this air conditioner does not heat. Sold alone, it is not eligible for the LogisVert grant. If the furnace also needs replacing, a central heat pump can handle both seasons; we can quote both options in the same visit.
How we prepare the project
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. For a move to 4 tons, we start with the ducts: ductwork designed for a smaller unit can limit airflow, and a bigger condensing unit would not change that. We also check the room left in the electrical panel. And if a room stays warm because of a duct that is too long or poorly insulated in the attic, we tell you frankly: the answer is not always a bigger unit.
On the day, our technicians set the unit, install the indoor section, connect the refrigerant piping (7/8 in vapor valve), evacuate, adjust the charge, connect the power and commission the system. We work in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and on the South Shore.

Ask for your free estimate: we assess the house as it is today, its ducts and its panel, then you receive a written quote. Financing is available.
When the house has grown, but the cooling has not
The N4A5S48AKAWA rejects outside the heat that a matched indoor section removes from the house air. The capacity tables in the Arcoaire spec sheet are built with the EVD4X48M21A section, a coil to be matched with an electric furnace or a fan coil.
- Enlarged houses where the old air conditioner is no longer enough
- Intergenerational homes served by a single duct system
- Large two-storey houses heated by an electric furnace
- Replacing a 4-ton central air conditioner

What to know before installing
- Cooling only. Sold alone: not eligible for the LogisVert grant.
- 208/230 V single-phase circuit: 32.8 A minimum ampacity, 50 A maximum time-delay fuse or breaker.
- The spec sheet publishes the same electrical data for this size and the 42,000 BTU/h size: we confirm them on the nameplate of the delivered unit.
- Indoor section not included; the piping connects to a 7/8 in vapor valve.

Frequently asked questions
Our house was enlarged: do we need 4 tons?
Not necessarily. The right size depends on insulation, windows and ductwork, not only on floor area. We assess the house during the free estimate and recommend the N4A5S size that fits.
Will the existing ducts be enough?
That is the question to settle before increasing capacity. Ductwork designed for a smaller unit can lack airflow; we check it on site and tell you whether it needs adapting.
What SEER2 will I get?
The manufacturer's spec sheet publishes 13.8 to 15 SEER2 for the 4-ton size, depending on the matched indoor section. The condensing unit alone has no certified rating.
Can it also heat the house?
No, it cools only. Sold alone, it is not eligible for the LogisVert grant. A central heat pump heats and cools; we can propose both options.
What does the manufacturer's warranty provide?
According to the ICP limited warranty certificate: parts for 10 years for the original owner with registration within 90 days of installation, otherwise 5 years; the certificate states that this registration condition does not apply in Quebec. Subsequent owners: 5 years. Labour is not covered by the manufacturer.
