Quick facts
A large house to cool: 3.5 tons, and the manufacturer's real numbers
Who the N4A5S42AKAWA is for
The N4A5S42AKAWA is the 3.5-ton (42,000 BTU/h) outdoor unit of the Arcoaire Performance N4A5S series. This size targets large houses: two-storey homes with plenty of windows, open-plan houses, properties where the finished basement and the upper floor must stay comfortable at the same time. It runs on R-410A with a single-stage scroll compressor, and it cools only.
Like any split central air conditioner, it needs an indoor section: a coil on top of the electric furnace or a fan coil, which pushes the cooled air through the ducts. The manufacturer's capacity tables are built with the EVD4X48M21A section.
Bigger does not mean more comfortable. An air conditioner too large for the house cools quickly, shuts off right away and leaves the humidity in the air. That is why we confirm the size on site before proposing 3.5 tons.
Three numbers to look at before deciding
Efficiency. The N4A5S series is advertised up to 16.0 SEER2, but for the 3.5-ton size, the spec sheet publishes 13.8 to 15 SEER2, depending on the matched indoor section. The condensing unit alone has no certified rating. We would rather give you the range for your size than the one in the brochure.
The electrical circuit. This size calls for a 32.8 A minimum ampacity and a 50 A maximum time-delay fuse or breaker, at 208/230 V single phase. In a house where the panel already feeds an electric furnace, a water heater and a range, the remaining capacity must be checked before ordering.
Sound. The spec sheet publishes a sound power of 76 dBA, or 74 dBA with sound shield. On a large lot, the location is often enough; on a narrow lot, the difference counts.
A useful reminder: this air conditioner does not heat and, sold alone, it is not eligible for the LogisVert grant. If you would rather have one system for winter and summer, ask us to compare with a central heat pump.
What AirGreen does
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. For a unit of this size, that licence matters: the same project involves the refrigerant and the electrical panel.
- Free on-site estimate, including a check of the panel and the ducts;
- Written quote specifying the matched indoor section and the circuit to install;
- Setting the unit, refrigerant piping with a 7/8 in vapor valve, evacuation and charge adjustment;
- Electrical connection and commissioning.
We install in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and on the South Shore.

Central air for large houses
The N4A5S42AKAWA is the 3.5-ton outdoor unit of the N4A5S series. It cools through a matched indoor section, a coil on an electric furnace or a fan coil; the manufacturer's capacity tables use the EVD4X48M21A section.
- Large two-storey or open-plan houses served by ductwork
- Replacing a 3.5-ton central air conditioner
- Houses heated by a large-capacity electric furnace
- Projects where the electrical panel has room for a 50 A circuit

Frequently asked questions
Why 13.8 to 15 SEER2 and not 16?
The N4A5S series is advertised at 13.8 to 16.0 SEER2, but the manufacturer's spec sheet publishes 13.8 to 15 SEER2 for the 3.5-ton size, depending on the matched indoor section. We give you the range for your size, not the series.
Will my electrical panel be enough?
This size requires a 32.8 A minimum circuit ampacity and a 50 A maximum time-delay fuse or breaker, at 208/230 V. We assess the capacity left in your panel during the free estimate, before the quote.
Does the sound shield make a difference?
For this size, the spec sheet publishes a sound power of 76 dBA without sound shield and 74 dBA with sound shield.
Can this air conditioner also heat?
No. It cools only and, sold alone, it is not eligible for the LogisVert grant. To heat and cool with the same system, you need a central heat pump.
What does the manufacturer's warranty cover?
The ICP limited warranty certificate covers parts for 10 years for the original owner if the unit is registered within 90 days of installation, otherwise 5 years; it states that this registration condition does not apply in Quebec. Subsequent owners: 5 years. Labour is not covered by the manufacturer.
