Quick facts
Replace a 3-ton central air conditioner without starting from scratch
A 3-ton condensing unit for houses with space to cool
The N4A5S36AKAWA is the 3-ton (36,000 BTU/h) outdoor unit of the Arcoaire Performance N4A5S series. It is mostly found in large single-storey houses, split-levels and homes where the finished basement is part of the living space. It runs on R-410A, with a single-stage scroll compressor, and it cools only.
Most projects in this size are replacements: the old air conditioner has served its time, the electric furnace is still good, and the ducts are in place. In that case, only the condensing unit and, often, the coil change. Arcoaire publishes a range of 14.3 to 16 SEER2 for this size, depending on the matched indoor unit; its capacity tables use the EVD4X37M21A indoor section.
What we check before replacing
Three points decide how the job goes. First, the refrigerant piping: this size has a 7/8 in vapor valve and a 3/8 in liquid valve. We measure what is in place and check its condition before proposing to reuse it. Next, the electrical circuit: the spec sheet calls for a 16.7 A minimum ampacity and a 25 A maximum time-delay fuse or breaker, at 208/230 V single phase. Finally, the location: the manufacturer allows up to 250 ft of equivalent length, which leaves the option of moving the unit if the old spot was not the right one.
Also note that this condensing unit does not heat and, sold alone, is not eligible for the LogisVert grant. If your furnace is also nearing the end, it is worth comparing with a central heat pump that would handle both seasons; we will gladly prepare both quotes.
A complete installation, by a single team
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. On installation day, our technicians remove the old unit, set the N4A5S36AKAWA, install or connect the indoor section, run the piping, evacuate, adjust the charge to the actual length, connect the power and commission the system.
The refrigerant in the old unit is recovered before it is removed, as the regulations require. The new unit is set level, away from roof drip and from snow sliding off in winter. At the end, we show you the thermostat settings and explain when to have the outdoor coil cleaned.
We work in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and on the South Shore.

Frequently asked questions
Can I reuse the piping from my old air conditioner?
Sometimes. This size has a 7/8 in vapor valve and a 3/8 in liquid valve. We check the diameter, condition and route of the existing piping before deciding; if there is any doubt, we recommend replacing it.
What electrical circuit is needed?
A 208/230 V single-phase circuit. The spec sheet lists a 16.7 A minimum ampacity and a 25 A maximum time-delay fuse or breaker.
What efficiency will I get?
Arcoaire publishes 14.3 to 16 SEER2 for this size, depending on the matched indoor section. The condensing unit alone has no certified rating.
Does the N4A5S36AKAWA qualify for a grant?
No. It cools only, and sold alone it is not eligible for the LogisVert grant. If you are replacing the whole system, a central heat pump is worth comparing.
What is the warranty?
The ICP limited warranty certificate covers parts for 10 years for the original owner with registration within 90 days of installation, otherwise 5 years; it states that this registration condition does not apply in Quebec. Subsequent owners: 5 years. Labour is not covered by the manufacturer.
