A condensing unit for lots where everything is close

In a semi-detached house in Montreal or a townhouse in Longueuil, the outdoor unit often ends up a few steps from a window, yours or the neighbour's. The N4A5S24AKAWA, the 2-ton (24,000 BTU/h) outdoor unit of the Arcoaire Performance N4A5S series, publishes a sound power of 73 dBA, with or without sound shield. It is the value Arcoaire puts forward as the lowest in the series.

The principle is that of any split central air conditioner. Outside, the single-stage scroll compressor and the fan reject the heat. Inside, a matched section, a coil on an electric furnace or a fan coil, cools the air your ductwork distributes. The unit runs on R-410A and cools only: it does not heat.

What to know before choosing

Efficiency depends on the match. For this size, the manufacturer's spec sheet publishes a range of 14.3 to 16 SEER2 depending on the indoor unit. There is no certified rating for the condensing unit alone, and, sold alone, it is not eligible for the LogisVert grant. If you are comparing with a central heat pump that would also heat the house, we show you both scenarios side by side.

Another detail we take seriously: two editions of the spec sheet do not give the same electrical values for this size's compressor. Rather than pick one at random, we read the nameplate of the delivered unit before sizing the circuit. The maximum protection is the same in both cases: a 20 A time-delay fuse or breaker, at 208/230 V single phase.

Finally, if you need cooling when it is cool outside, for example for a server room in the basement, the manufacturer requires a low-ambient pressure switch below 55°F (12.8°C) and approved kits to go down to 0°F (-18°C). For ordinary summer use in a home, it is not needed.

For a unit installed close to the neighbours, the location is half the result. We look with you at the available setback, the nearby windows and the route of the refrigerant piping; the manufacturer allows up to 250 ft of equivalent length, which leaves room to move the unit away from the bedrooms.
