Who the EHD4X48AAL is for

A large single-family home or a plex served by one central system needs a coil that matches the outdoor unit. Arcoaire’s EHD4X48AAL is a horizontal cased evaporator coil, R-410A, in a 4-ton size (48,000 BTU/h). It is for homeowners whose air handler or electric furnace is installed on its side, and for contractors replacing a horizontal coil of the same capacity.

Its bi-flow TXV meters refrigerant in both flow directions: the coil serves with a central air conditioner in summer or with a heat pump year-round. The coil is all aluminum, which the manufacturer presents as corrosion resistant.

What to check before buying

The bigger the system, the more the ductwork matters. A 4-ton coil paired with undersized ducts means noise and poorly cooled rooms. At the estimate, we therefore look at the size of the main ducts, the number of outlets and the return air, as well as the outdoor unit model. In a plex, we also check which units the system serves, so that every floor gets its share of air.

Available space is the other key point. The published height for this size is not the same from one document to another; we confirm the cabinet dimensions before ordering rather than relying on a single source. Bi-directional airflow then helps orient the coil on the side that suits the blower and the duct take-off, whether the system sits in a crawl space or under the basement ceiling.

During installation

Our technicians attach the coil to the indoor unit, braze the refrigerant lines, connect the condensate drain to a floor drain or a pump, then run the leak test and the evacuation. Commissioning is done in cooling and, with a heat pump, in heating. Finally, we check that condensate drains properly before leaving. The slide-out coil will then make cleanings simpler.

Warranty and availability

Arcoaire covers parts with a 10-year limited warranty if the product is registered within 90 days of installation, 5 years otherwise. This size is available while supplies last and, sold alone, it is not eligible for the LogisVert grant.
