A size for large central systems

The EHD4X60AAL tops Arcoaire’s horizontal series, which starts at the EHD4X24AAL. At 5 tons (60,000 BTU/h) with R-410A, it completes large-capacity central systems whose air handler or electric furnace is installed on its side. It is mainly for contractors and homeowners replacing a horizontal coil of the same size, or installing a 5-ton central heat pump on an indoor unit already in place.

In the region, it is found in large single-family homes and in plexes served by a single system, often with the indoor unit under the basement ceiling or in a crawl space. Choosing the size remains a matter of calculation: capacity must meet the building’s real needs, not just its size.

What sets it apart

The coil, housed in a cabinet, is all aluminum; Arcoaire presents it as corrosion resistant. The bi-flow TXV meters refrigerant in both flow directions, which lets this coil pair with a central air conditioner or a heat pump. In summer, it cools and dehumidifies the air; in winter, with a heat pump, it warms the house air.

Two practical details matter on a coil this size. First, horizontal airflow is bi-directional: air can pass through the coil in either direction, which makes it easier to orient relative to the blower. Second, the coil slides out of the cabinet for cleaning, a time saver at every service visit.

Our installation

We start with a free on-site estimate, followed by a written quote. With a 5-ton system, the visit looks at the ductwork as much as at the outdoor unit: undersized ducts would hurt comfort and add noise. We also confirm the cabinet dimensions, because the documents consulted disagree on the height of this size.

Our technicians then set the coil, braze the refrigerant lines, connect the condensate drain, run the leak test and the evacuation, then commission the system. Worth knowing before you order

Arcoaire’s limited warranty covers owner-occupied residential applications: 10 years on parts with registration within 90 days of installation, 5 years without registration.
