A 3-ton coil to cool a family home without changing the furnace

Your 21 in electric furnace heats the house well, but in summer the upper floors become hard to live in. The Arcoaire EVD4X36M21A evaporator coil is added to that furnace to pair it with a 3-ton R-410A central air conditioner. The same ductwork then handles heating in winter and cooling in summer. We install this coil in Montreal, Laval and Longueuil, and throughout the South Shore and the North Shore.

What the EVD4X36M21A is and who it is for

It is a cased V-coil from Arcoaire’s Power-V series. The 24-gauge pre-painted steel cabinet is fully insulated, the microchannel coil is all aluminum and the condensate drain pan is PBT, two materials that resist corrosion. The thermostatic expansion valve is factory installed. The 3-ton size mainly targets multi-storey homes, semi-detached houses and cottages heated by a 21 in electric furnace, the width Arcoaire specifies for a flush fit. We confirm the size during the visit, based on the house and the chosen air conditioner.

Adding air conditioning or replacing a coil

Two situations come up often. In the first, the house has never had central air: we add the coil on the furnace and an air conditioner outside. In the second, an old coil leaks while the furnace is in good shape: the EVD4X36M21A replaces it, provided the outdoor air conditioner uses R-410A and its capacity matches. The connections are 3/8 in for the liquid line and 3/4 in for the suction line.

Before deciding, keep in mind that Arcoaire limits this model to air conditioning: it does not pair with a heat pump. Sold alone, it does not qualify for the LogisVert grant. It installs vertically, upflow or downflow, and it is available while supplies last.

4. Connecting the refrigerant lines, leak testing and evacuation.
5. Connecting the condensate drain, then commissioning and setting the blower within the 900 to 1,500 CFM range published by the manufacturer.

Arcoaire offers a 10-year parts limited warranty when the unit is registered on time, and 5 years if it is not registered within 90 days of installation.
