GENERAL AIRSTAGE RLXFZ 2-Zone 36,000 BTU Heat Pump: The Extended Bungalow, One 9,000 BTU Head on Each Wing, Installed by AirGreen
This GENERAL AIRSTAGE multi-zone system and the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE system built around the AOU36RLXFZ1 outdoor unit are one and the same machine: a 36,000 BTU compressor, 2 zones, and two wall-mounted heads of 9,000 + 9,000 BTU in this page's configuration. The Japanese manufacturer, Fujitsu General Limited, took the name GENERAL Inc. on January 1, 2026. AHRI certificate 8071548, the values published by the manufacturer and the warranty of 12 years on the compressor, 12 years on parts and 6 years on labour remain those of the Fujitsu model.
The extended bungalow has a challenge all its own: the original house and the addition do not live at the same pace. The bedroom wing stays mild, while the new room at the back, with its large windows and higher ceiling, overheats in July and cools off fast in January. A single wall-mounted heat pump in the living room never reaches the far end of the addition. Two heads, one on each wing, connected to the same compressor: each part of the house gets its own air, at its own set point.
On the South Shore, in Saint-Bruno as in Saint-Basile, single-storey houses have been extended in every possible way: rear extension, side wing, old carport closed in. The logic stays the same everywhere: one head where you sleep, one head where you live.
GENERAL or Fujitsu AIRSTAGE: the same machine
The GENERAL name does not come out of nowhere. Paloma Rheem Holdings, owner of Rheem since 1988, bought Fujitsu General in August 2025; on January 1, 2026, the manufacturer officially took the name GENERAL Inc. The head office and the R&D centre are still in Kawasaki, Japan, and the factories, the AIRSTAGE line, the model numbers and the warranty program have not changed. The Fujitsu brand is gradually disappearing from the boxes; until then, the same AOU36RLXFZ1 outdoor unit is sold under both names.
To spare you comparing two pages that say the same thing, we put the values side by side below. They match line by line, since it is the same AHRI certificate. Rheem Canada has sold these units across the country since February 2026; on the distribution side, we carry on with Groupe Master.

In a bungalow, winter is played out on the ground floor, and that is where this system earns its place. According to the values published by the manufacturer, the AOU36RLXFZ1 outdoor unit delivers 21,400 BTU of heat at −8 °C and 22,600 BTU at −15 °C, with a COP of 1.82 at that last temperature. In practical terms, on a −15 °C night, the heat pump produces 1.82 times more heat than the electricity it consumes. The manufacturer guarantees heating down to −15 °C; the model is not certified for cold climates, so your current heating stays in place as a backup for extreme cold.
Over the whole season, the HSPF2 of 8.6 measures heating performance: the higher it is, the less each winter month costs you. In summer, the SEER2 of 18.0 and the EER2 of 9.5 describe the cooling, the first over the whole season, the second in heat-wave weather. On the humidity side, the unit extracts up to 3.8 pints of water per hour in cooling, which makes the addition less clammy on hot, humid days.
One wing, one set point. The bedroom side can stay cool for the night while the addition, often a family room or an open kitchen, keeps its daytime temperature. If it is only used in the evening, you turn it down in the morning without touching the bedrooms. The Inverter compressor modulates its speed according to what the two heads ask for, instead of running flat out and then shutting off. The outdoor unit shows a published sound level of 55.0 dB(A): we prefer to place it away from bedroom windows, yours as well as the neighbour's.
This page's configuration calls for two 9,000 BTU heads, one per wing. Nothing forces you to stick with it: the 36,000 BTU compressor accepts up to 4 zones and six compatible indoor units, which you choose with us:
- ASU7RLF1 (7,000 BTU): a child's bedroom or an office added later.
- ASU9RLF1 (9,000 BTU): a modest-sized wing, or the main bedroom.
- ASU12RLF1 (12,000 BTU): the bungalow's original living room.
- ASU15RF1 (15,000 BTU): an open-concept addition.
- ASU18RLF (18,000 BTU): the large family room with a high ceiling and generous windows.
- ASU24RLF (24,000 BTU): the very large addition, open onto the kitchen and dining room.
A piece of field advice: a head placed in the bedroom hallway serves the nearby rooms when the doors stay open. If you sleep with the door closed, one head per bedroom is better, and this compressor has the headroom to do it. Those two free zones are the real strength of a 36,000 BTU unit in an extended bungalow: you start with two heads and come back later for a bedroom or the finished basement, with no second outdoor unit in the yard.
At your home, the installation goes like this:
- The outdoor unit is installed at the back, ideally between the two wings, on a raised base or a wall bracket, sheltered from snow sliding off the roof.
- One refrigerant line per head; in a bungalow, it often runs through the basement or along the exterior wall under a line cover, which keeps it discreet.
- Each head is mounted high on a clear wall, aimed so the air reaches the far end of the room.
- The condensate from each head drains by gravity to the outside or to the basement drain, with a water test before the work is finished.
- A dedicated electrical circuit at the panel, then a commissioning by a refrigeration technician, with tests in both modes.
Between two visits, your only job is to take out the indoor filters of each head and rinse them, often during peak season. Every spring, before the first hot days, a refrigeration technician cleans the outdoor coil, checks the drainage and verifies the operation of each zone. To control both wings from your phone, Wi-Fi is offered as an option.
A frank word about money: this model is not ENERGY STAR certified and it is not on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 27, 2026. So we promise you no grant on this system. What it offers in return is the long warranty described above and the flexibility of a compressor that accepts up to four zones. If the grant weighs heavily in your decision, ask us to compare it with a listed model from the same series.
This system is for the owner of a bungalow extended at the back or on the side, whose new wing has never been heated or cooled as well as the rest of the house. It also suits the family that wants to settle two key rooms first and keep the door open to two more zones, and the homeowner who prefers a single outdoor unit behind the house to two appliances cluttering the yard.

What people ask us about multi-zone systems.
Can I heat one room and cool another at the same time?
No. On a multi-zone system like this one, every head works in the same mode, heating or cooling. Each room still keeps its own set temperature.
What happens when every room calls for heat?
They share the outdoor unit’s capacity: 21,400 BTU/h at −8 °C, 22,600 at −15 °C.
How many heads can I connect?
Up to 4 on this outdoor unit. This product is configured for 2 heads.
Down to what temperature does it heat?
Down to −15 °C.
Is it noisy?
Indoors, the reference head goes down to 21 dB(A). Outdoors, 55 dB(A): we place the unit away from bedroom windows.
Why a multi-zone instead of several wall units?
One outdoor unit on the wall and one circuit. In return, the rooms share the capacity, and if the outdoor unit stops, every zone stops.
What does the warranty cover?
Our sheet lists 12 years on the compressor and 12 years on parts. AirGreen extended warranty: possible.
