14 · Description

Everything we have written about this system.

A house without ducts, heated and cooled in four zones

Most homes heated with electric baseboards have no air ducts at all. Installing a central system would mean opening ceilings, giving up closets and redoing finishes. The 4-Zone Heat Pump ARCOAIRE DLCMHB | 36,000 BTU - R410A takes another route: four wall heads, one per zone, connected to a single DLCMHBH36DAK condenser whose certified capacity holds up to -15 °C.

The 3-ton condenser serves 4 zones here, which is its maximum of 4. The wall heads intended for it are the DLFSHCH09XAK, the DLFSHCH12XAK and the DLFSHCH18XAK. Its certified ratings are 20.0 SEER2, 12.5 EER2 and 9.7 HSPF2. The system is ENERGY STAR certified with the cold-climate designation under ENERGY STAR ID 2411692, and it qualifies for a $4,200 LogisVert grant.

No ducts, no ceilings to open

A central system distributes air through a network of ducts starting from a single unit. In a house that has never had any, that network has to go somewhere: in the ceilings, the walls, the closets. A wall head is simply fixed to the wall and only needs one hole for its lines and drain. The work is done without demolition, and each room keeps its own set point, which a single-zone central system does not allow.

The trade-off is visible: each equipped room has a head on the wall. We discuss its location with you, room by room, so that it is effective and discreet.

The reverse is also true. If your house already has a ductwork network in good condition, for example behind an old forced-air furnace, a central heat pump connected to those ducts may make more sense than a multi-zone system. We look at both options during the visit and recommend the one that suits your house, not the one that suits our catalogue.

Four zones for an entire house

This size targets a complete mid-sized house: a two-storey with a living room on the ground floor and three bedrooms upstairs, a bungalow whose living room, kitchen and two bedrooms need to be handled separately, or a semi-detached with an office in the basement. The DLFSHCH18XAK, the largest of the three heads, goes in the living space; the DLFSHCH12XAK in the main bedroom; the DLFSHCH09XAK in the small bedrooms or the office. The load calculation confirms each choice.

The four heads share the condenser's capacity. When they all call at full demand, it is split between them; the rest of the time, the occupied rooms benefit from the capacity the others are not using. With 4 zones out of a maximum of 4, every connection on the condenser is used.

Capacity that holds at -15 °C

The certificate lists 35,000 BTU/h at -8 °C (17 °F), with a COP of 2.35, and 36,000 BTU/h at -15 °C (5 °F), with a COP of 1.90. The maximum published capacity is 36,000 BTU/h at -15 °C. The two points are measured separately; we report each one as published.

At -8 °C, the condenser delivers 97% of its nominal size; at -15 °C, all of it. For a four-zone house, this is the most important figure: the capacity shared among the heads does not melt away when the cold sets in. A COP of 1.90 means that at -15 °C, each kilowatt-hour consumed returns 1.90 kilowatt-hours of heat, where a baseboard returns one. ENERGY STAR's cold-climate designation confirms this low-temperature performance.

The certificate does not publish a colder point. The existing baseboards therefore stay in place as backup, set slightly below the heads' set point: they serve during extreme cold and defrost cycles, those few minutes when the condenser melts the frost off its coil and a cloud of vapour escapes from it.

These figures come from certificate AHRI 207643002, published by NEEP.

Where to place four heads

A well-placed head heats and cools better, and goes unnoticed. We mount it high on a wall, preferably an exterior wall to shorten the lines, with enough space above it for the air intake. In the living room, it blows along the length of the room rather than straight at the sofa. In a bedroom, the air sweeps the room without aiming at the bed. In a kitchen, we keep it away from the stove, whose heat and grease would skew the temperature reading and clog the filter.

The inverter condenser, zone by zone

The inverter compressor adjusts its speed to the number of heads calling and meters the R-410A refrigerant sent to each one. An unoccupied bedroom can be shut off without affecting the other zones. The four heads always work in the same mode, heating or cooling, as on any multi-zone system of this type; in a home that lives through the same season from one room to the next, this rule goes unnoticed.

Cooling the whole house

In cooling, the system is built around a nominal size of 36,000 BTU/h for the four zones. Each room gets cool air where it needs it, without depending on air moving from one room to another. Extended low-speed operation removes moisture from the air; the house stays cool and dry without an overly low set point. Each head also offers a dehumidification mode for muggy days.

The certified ratings, in plain terms

  • 20.0 SEER2: cooling efficiency over a whole summer.
  • 12.5 EER2: cooling at full load, in hot weather.
  • 9.7 HSPF2: heating efficiency over the whole cold season. For an entire house heated by heat pump, this is the rating that weighs most.
  • COP: the ratio between heat delivered and electricity consumed, at a specific temperature.

The $4,200 LogisVert grant

The system is listed in Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program, with $4,200 for the owner of an existing home, according to the list in effect on the installation date. We confirm eligibility before signing and prepare the detailed invoice, model numbers and proof of payment. Our page on the efficient heat pump grant summarizes the program's conditions.

Installation and maintenance

Our installation

  1. Visit and load calculation: each room is measured; insulation and windows are noted.
  2. Electrical panel: we check there is room for the condenser's dedicated circuit.
  3. Condenser: above the snow line, on a wall bracket or a stand, sheltered from snow sliding off the roof.
  4. Four refrigerant line sets: one per head, grouped in a line cover on the facade or run indoors when possible.
  5. Four drains: one per head, sloped; a condensate pump only if gravity is not enough.
  6. Commissioning: vacuum, leak test, check of each zone and setup of the remotes with you.

Maintenance

Rinse the filters of all four heads every two weeks in season, preferably on the same day so none gets forgotten. Keep the condenser clear of snow and leaves, without covering it in winter. One HVAC maintenance visit per year cleans the coils, fans and drains and checks the electrical connections. Our cleaning service takes over when you prefer to hand off the annual visit.

Warranty

Warranty: 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts and 6 years on labor.

15 · Questions

What people ask us about multi-zone systems.

Can I heat one room and cool another at the same time?

No. On a multi-zone system like this one, every head works in the same mode, heating or cooling. Each room still keeps its own set temperature.

What happens when every room calls for heat?

They share the outdoor unit’s capacity: 35,000 BTU/h at −8 °C, 36,000 at −15 °C.

How many heads can I connect?

Up to 4 on this outdoor unit. This product is configured for 4 heads.

How much is the LogisVert grant?

$4,200. The grant never exceeds 100 % of the cost before taxes; apply within 9 months of installation.

Is it ENERGY STAR certified?

Yes, cold climate, ID 2411692.

Why a multi-zone instead of several wall units?

One outdoor unit on the wall and one circuit. In return, the rooms share the capacity, and if the outdoor unit stops, every zone stops.

What does the warranty cover?

Our sheet lists 10 years on the compressor and 10 years on parts. AirGreen extended warranty: possible.
