Galvanized Ventilation Ducts
A forced-air or air exchanger network is built one piece at a time, from the trunk to the grille. These are the galvanized steel parts that we use to add a branch or redo the outlets in a basement.
The parts of the network
- 60 in round pipe: 4 to 16 in; 32 gauge sheet up to 6 in, 28 gauge from 7 to 12 in.
- Elbows and reducers: adjustable elbow from 4 to 16 in; tapered and straight reducers from 4 × 3 to 12 × 10 in.
- Branch take-offs: side take-offs with or without damper, 90° top take-off, tee, wye and centred wye fittings.
- Balancing and closing: round damper with quadrant key, backdraft damper, end cap, C and S cleats.
- Floor boots: angled, universal or extended; 2-1/4, 3-1/4 or 4 × 10 in opening, 4, 5 or 6 in collar.
- Oval family: duct, elbows, oval-to-round transitions and ceiling outlet, in 5 and 6 in.
Reading the sizes
A round part is sized by the nominal duct diameter: measure the actual collar of the unit or the existing duct. On a boot, the opening follows the grille and the collar follows the branch. Oval is for places where round will not fit: measure the cavity depth. Every joint is screwed, then sealed with aluminum tape or mastic.
