Quick facts
45 kW on a 208 V single-phase service, with output that stays under control
The VoltMax 45 and single-phase buildings
Some buildings only have 208 V single phase, even when their heating load is large: an older building with an addition, a commercial unit converted into offices. Thermo 2000’s VoltMax, a commercial and institutional hot water electric boiler, comes in a single-phase version for these cases. This model delivers 45 kW and draws 216.8 A.
It is part of the series’ configuration A (22.5 to 90 kW). Its 10 Incoloy immersion elements, each rated at 6 kW, are replaceable. It heats the water of a closed loop that serves radiators, radiant floors or hot water coils, and can feed an indirect water heater through its second setpoint.
Controlled output
With 45 kW on a single-phase service, the way the boiler draws its power matters. The VoltMax does not draw it all at once: SCR solid-state relays vary it from 0 to 100%, in addition to relay stages, and Thermo 2000 points out that this modulation limits peak power demand.
The Schneider Electric controller goes further. It accepts an external 0-10 Vdc signal for the setpoint and for the output, and communicates over BACnet IP or MS-TP. A building management system can therefore set the boiler’s output according to the other equipment running. Without an external system, the controller sets the water to the weather itself with the included outdoor sensor, within a 50 °F to 200 °F setpoint range.
Its 3 in backlit screen shows alarm codes in French or English, and its Ethernet port provides a web page and email alarms.
What installation by AirGreen covers
Everything starts with a free on-site estimate in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore or on the South Shore. We assess the electrical service and the loads already connected, since the boiler draws 216.8 A. If the building has three phase, we compare this version with the 208 V three-phase VoltMax 45. The written quote includes the circulator and expansion tank, which are not among the parts supplied by Thermo 2000.
Our technicians install the boiler with the required clearances (24 in in front, 32 in above, 3 in on the sides and at the back), connect it through its 1 1/2 in NPT connections, mount the outdoor sensor and make the electrical connection. After filling and purging, we program the controller and, where applicable, the external 0-10 Vdc control.
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. Thermo 2000 covers the tank for 10 years (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years.
Let’s check your electrical service
To find out whether a 45 kW VoltMax suits your 208 V single-phase building, ask for a free estimate. You receive a written quote, and financing is available.
High output on a single-phase service
When a building supplied at 208 V single phase needs a lot of heat, the VoltMax 45 delivers 45 kW to its hot water loop. Its output stays under control: it modulates from 0 to 100% and can be set by an external signal.
- Buildings on 208 V single phase with a large heating load
- Replacing an electric boiler of comparable output
- Buildings where an external system coordinates equipment loads
- Radiators, radiant floors and hot water coils

What to know before installing
- 208 V single-phase, 60 Hz power supply. At 216.8 A, the electrical service, panel and conductors must be checked first.
- The 10 elements carry a 6 kW rating each; Thermo 2000 publishes 45 kW for this model at 208 V.
- If the building has three phase, the VoltMax 45 also comes in 208 V three phase: we compare both options.
- The circulator and expansion tank are not among the parts supplied by Thermo 2000.
- Clearances: 24 in in front, 32 in above, 3 in on the sides and at the back, none at the floor. Weight: 310 lb (141 kg).
- Low water cut-off optional on this size (standard above 60 kW).
- Schneider Electric controller with backlit display
- Outdoor temperature sensor
- Control ON/OFF switch
- Control and power fuses and breakers
- SCR relays
- 2 limit controls, one automatic, one manual
- Factory-installed relief valve
- Drain valve

Frequently asked questions
Can our electrical service supply this boiler?
It depends on its capacity and the loads already connected. The boiler draws 216.8 A on 208 V single phase: we do this assessment during the free estimate, before proposing this model or another configuration.
Can the boiler’s output be limited?
Yes. The controller accepts an external 0-10 Vdc signal for the setpoint and for the output, and communicates over BACnet IP or MS-TP. A building management system can therefore set the output drawn.
Is there a three-phase version?
Yes, the VoltMax 45 also comes in 208 V three phase. If your building has three phase, we compare both versions during the estimate.
What does the outdoor sensor do?
It is included. The controller uses it to adjust the water temperature to the weather, within a 50 °F to 200 °F setpoint range.
What warranty does Thermo 2000 offer?
10 years on the tank (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and 2 years on electrical and mechanical components, parts and accessories.
