A 49.5 kW electric boiler that modulates its output from 0 to 100%, for buildings with a 208 V supply

What the VoltMax 50 is and who it suits

The VoltMax SCR is Thermo 2000’s commercial electric boiler. The VoltMax 50 size, on 208 V single phase, delivers 49.5 kW to a hot-water loop: radiant floors, radiators, the coils of a hydro-air system or an indirect water heater. It suits apartment buildings, commercial spaces and institutional buildings that heat with water and have a 208 V electrical supply.

What sets it apart is in the three letters of its name. A solid-state relay (SCR) varies output from 0 to 100% instead of simply switching elements on and off. According to Thermo 2000, this modulation limits the boiler’s peak power demand. Relay stages complement the solid-state relay, and the controller rotates the order in which they work.

What to plan for in a 208 V building

The VoltMax 50 name rounds the output: the manufacturer’s documentation lists 49.5 kW at 208 V. For this size, Thermo 2000 also publishes a current of 238.4 A. That is the first value we compare with the capacity of the electrical service, before recommending this model rather than a neighbouring size in the series, such as the 45 kW or the 54 kW VoltMax.

The boiler is vertical and compact. Thermo 2000 requires 3 in of clearance on the sides and back, 24 in at the front and 32 in above, and it can sit directly on the floor. It weighs 310 lb (141 kg) and holds 11 US gal of water. Its four 1 1/2 in male NPT side connections tie into the existing loop.

The Incoloy immersion elements can be replaced one by one: 6 elements of 5 kW and 6 of 6 kW. The manufacturer describes the unit as quiet, clean and low-maintenance.

A controller built for building management

The Schneider Electric controller shows its data on a 3 in backlit display, in French or English, with alarm codes. The outdoor sensor is included: water temperature follows the weather, which avoids running the loop at full output in mild weather. The Ethernet port gives access to a web page and sends alarms by email. The controller communicates over BACnet IP or MS-TP with a building management system, accepts a 0-10 Vdc signal for setpoint or output, and handles schedules. A contact controls the pump, with or without domestic hot water priority, and a second setpoint serves an indirect water heater.

What AirGreen’s installation covers

Everything starts with a free on-site estimate. We look at the hot-water loop, the mechanical room, the electrical service and the unit being replaced. You then receive a written quote that specifies the circulator and expansion tank, which are not on the list of supplied parts, as well as the low water cut-off, offered as an option on this size.

On installation day, our technicians set the boiler in place, connect it to the loop, extend the discharge of the factory-installed relief valve and make the electrical connection. They mount the outdoor sensor, fill and purge the system, then set the setpoint and schedules with you. AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. Thermo 2000 covers the tank for 10 years (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years.

01 · What it is for

Hot-water heating for a building with a 208 V supply

The VoltMax 50 heats the water in a hydronic loop that serves radiant floors, radiators or the coils of a hydro-air system. Thermo 2000 designs it for commercial, institutional and multi-unit buildings.

  • Replacing an end-of-life electric boiler in a building with 208 V single-phase power
  • Apartment buildings heated by hot-water radiators
  • Commercial spaces with a radiant floor
  • An indirect water heater connected to the controller’s second setpoint
SCR modulation from 0 to 100%The solid-state relay varies output instead of switching elements on and off. According to Thermo 2000, this limits peak power demand.
Remote managementEthernet port with a web page and email alarms, BACnet IP / MS-TP communication and 0-10 Vdc external control.
Replaceable Incoloy elements6 immersion elements of 5 kW and 6 of 6 kW, run in stages that the controller rotates.

03 · Before installing

What to know before installing

  • 208 V single-phase, 60 Hz power supply. Thermo 2000 lists a current of 238.4 A: we check the capacity of the building’s electrical service before confirming this size.
  • The circulator and expansion tank are not on Thermo 2000’s list of supplied parts. We select them for the water loop and add them to the quote.
  • At 49.5 kW, the low water cut-off is an option; Thermo 2000 installs it as standard only above 60 kW.
  • Required clearances: 3 in on the sides and back, 24 in at the front, 32 in above, 0 in below the unit.
  • The unit weighs 310 lb (141 kg) and holds 11 US gal of water once filled: the mechanical room floor must carry that load.
In the box
  • Schneider Electric controller with backlit display
  • Outdoor temperature sensor
  • On/off control switch
  • Control and power fuses and breakers
  • SCR relay
  • 2 limit controls (automatic and manual)
  • Factory-installed relief valve
  • Drain valve

06 · Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why does the VoltMax 50 deliver 49.5 kW?

The model designation rounds the output. Thermo 2000 publishes 49.5 kW for the VoltMax 50 on 208 V single phase; that is the value we use to compare the boiler with the building’s heating load.

What power supply is needed?

208 V single phase, 60 Hz. Thermo 2000 lists a current of 238.4 A for this model. We size the breaker and conductors from that value, after looking at the electrical service.

Can it connect to the building management system?

Yes. The controller communicates over BACnet IP or MS-TP, and its Ethernet port gives access to a web page and email alarms. The setpoint and output can also follow a 0-10 Vdc external signal.

Is the circulator supplied?

No. Neither the circulator nor the expansion tank is on the list of supplied parts. We select them for the loop and list them in the written quote.

What warranty does Thermo 2000 offer?

A 10-year limited warranty on the tank, for closed-loop heating, and 2 years on electrical and mechanical components.
