Quick facts
56 kW on 208 V three phase, with output that follows demand instead of running all or nothing
Why SCR modulation matters in a building
A conventional staged electric boiler switches its elements on and off in blocks. Thermo 2000’s VoltMax SCR adds a solid-state relay that varies output continuously from 0 to 100%, with relay stages as a complement. According to the manufacturer, this modulation limits the boiler’s peak power demand. The controller also rotates the order of the stages, and the included outdoor sensor sets water temperature by the weather, with a setpoint of 50 °F to 200 °F (10 °C to 93 °C).
What the VoltMax 56 is and where it goes
This model delivers 56 kW, or 191,072 BTU/h, on 208 V three phase. It heats the water loop of a condominium building, an office building or a mixed-use building: radiant floors in the units, radiators, the coils of a hydro-air system. A second setpoint supplies an indirect water heater when needed, with or without domestic hot water priority.
In a condominium building, the boiler room is often the responsibility of an association run by volunteer directors. The Schneider Electric controller makes their job easier: a web page and email alarms through the Ethernet port, alarm codes on a 3 in backlit display, in French or English. If the building has a management system, communication runs over BACnet IP or MS-TP.
Before ordering
Thermo 2000 publishes a current of 156.4 A for this model; that is the value we compare with the building’s electrical service. The boiler is vertical and compact. It requires 3 in of clearance on the sides and back, 24 in at the front and 32 in above, and sits directly on the floor. It weighs 310 lb (141 kg) and holds 11 US gal of water. Its four 1 1/2 in male NPT side connections tie it into the existing piping.
Two items are added to the order: the circulator and the expansion tank, which are not on the list of supplied parts. The low water cut-off is optional on this size; Thermo 2000 installs it as standard above 60 kW.
Our installation method
- A free on-site estimate, with the manager or a director of the association.
- A written quote detailing the boiler, the circulator, the expansion tank and the options chosen.
- Installation by our technicians: setting in place, connection to the loop, discharge piping for the factory-installed relief valve, electrical connection, outdoor sensor.
- Commissioning: filling, purging, setting the setpoint and the email addresses that will receive the alarms.
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. Thermo 2000 covers the tank for 10 years (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years.
Let’s prepare your building’s quote
We install the VoltMax SCR in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and on the South Shore. Ask for your free estimate: the quote is in writing, and financing is available.
Output that follows the building’s demand
The VoltMax 56’s solid-state relay (SCR) varies output from 0 to 100% according to heating demand. According to Thermo 2000, this modulation limits the boiler’s peak power demand.
- Condominium buildings heated by a central hot-water loop
- Offices and mixed-use buildings with 208 V three-phase power
- Radiant floors, radiators and hydro-air coils
- An indirect water heater on the controller’s second setpoint

Frequently asked questions
What does SCR mean?
It is the solid-state relay that controls the elements. Instead of switching whole stages on and off, it varies output from 0 to 100%. Thermo 2000 states that this modulation limits peak power demand.
VoltMax 54 or VoltMax 56: which one to choose?
They are two neighbouring sizes in the 208 V three-phase series. The VoltMax 56 delivers 56 kW, or 191,072 BTU/h. The right choice depends on the building’s heating load calculation, which we do before the quote.
What current should be planned for?
Thermo 2000 publishes 156.4 A for this model on 208 V three phase. We size the breaker and conductors from that value, after checking the electrical service.
Can the condominium association monitor the boiler remotely?
Yes. The controller’s Ethernet port gives access to a web page and sends alarms by email to the designated people. The controller also communicates over BACnet IP or MS-TP.
How much maintenance does it need?
The manufacturer describes it as quiet, clean and low-maintenance. Its Incoloy immersion elements are replaceable.
