A commercial boiler without three-phase power

A daycare set up in a former shop, a neighbourhood clinic, a good-sized apartment building: many buildings in Laval, on the South Shore or on the North Shore heat with hot water without having a three-phase supply. Thermo 2000’s VoltMax 60 answers that case. This model from the commercial VoltMax SCR series delivers 60 kW, or 204,720 BTU/h, from a 240 V single-phase supply.

It heats the water loop that feeds radiators, a radiant floor or the coil of a hydro-air system placed in a duct system. A second setpoint can also serve an indirect water heater for domestic hot water, with or without priority.

One boiler, flexible control

The Schneider Electric controller sets water temperature using the included outdoor sensor, within a setpoint of 50 °F to 200 °F (10 °C to 93 °C). It handles schedules, which lets you reduce heating in the evening and on weekends in a commercial space. The solid-state relay (SCR) varies output from 0 to 100% and, according to Thermo 2000, limits peak power demand.

Heating relies on 10 Incoloy immersion elements, all 6 kW. They are replaceable, and the controller rotates the order of the relay stages. The manufacturer describes the unit as quiet, clean and low-maintenance.

What the installation requires

The first point to check is electrical. Thermo 2000 publishes a current of 250 A for this model: that is a large load for a single-phase service, and we compare it with the available capacity before confirming the size. If the service is too tight, a smaller size in the series, such as the 55 kW or 48 kW VoltMax, may suit depending on the heating load.

As for space, the boiler is vertical and compact: 3 in of clearance on the sides and back, 24 in at the front, 32 in above, set directly on the floor. It weighs 310 lb (141 kg) and holds 11 US gal of water. At 60 kW, the low water cut-off remains an option, and the circulator and expansion tank are not among the supplied parts.
