Quick facts
72 kW on 240 V single phase, with output your building can control
The largest 240 V single-phase size
Some large buildings heated with hot water only have a single-phase supply: a large apartment building in Laval, a commercial building on the North Shore, an old building expanded over the years. Thermo 2000’s VoltMax 72 is designed for them. Among the 240 V single-phase sizes we offer in the VoltMax SCR series, it is the largest: 72 kW, or 245,664 BTU/h according to the manufacturer.
It heats the water loop that feeds radiators, radiant floors or hydro-air coils, and its second setpoint can serve an indirect water heater, with or without domestic hot water priority.
300 A: a load to plan for
Thermo 2000 publishes a current of 300 A for this model. On a single-phase service, that is a very large load, and it is the first thing we check. If the margin is not there, you have two options: a smaller size in the series, such as the 66 kW or 60 kW VoltMax, if the heating load allows it, or an increase in the building’s electrical capacity.
Once the boiler is in place, its output stays under control. The solid-state relay (SCR) varies it from 0 to 100%, which, according to Thermo 2000, limits peak power demand. An external system, such as a building management system, can also send it a setpoint and output through a 0-10 Vdc signal, or communicate with it over BACnet IP or MS-TP.
What the boiler includes
Above 60 kW, Thermo 2000 installs a low water cut-off as standard, which interrupts heating if the water level drops. Two limit controls (automatic and manual), the factory-installed relief valve, control and power fuses and breakers, the outdoor sensor and the Schneider Electric controller complete the delivery. The controller shows alarm codes in French or English, and its Ethernet port gives access to a web page and email alarms.
Heating relies on 12 replaceable 6 kW Incoloy immersion elements, run in stages that the controller rotates. The unit is vertical and compact: 3 in of clearance on the sides and back, 24 in at the front, 32 in above, 310 lb (141 kg) and 11 US gal of water. The circulator and expansion tank are added to the quote.
AirGreen’s installation
We start with a free on-site estimate, including a review of the electrical loads, then you receive a written quote. Our technicians install the boiler, connect it to the loop through its 1 1/2 in male NPT side connections, make the electrical connection, mount the outdoor sensor, fill and purge the system, check the safety devices and set up the controller.
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. Thermo 2000 covers the tank for 10 years (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years.
Let’s start with the estimate
We install the VoltMax SCR in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and on the South Shore. Ask for your free estimate: you receive a written quote, and financing is available.
The largest 240 V single-phase VoltMax size
Among the 240 V single-phase VoltMax SCR sizes we offer, the VoltMax 72 is the largest. It heats the water loop of a large building that has no three-phase supply, provided the electrical service can carry its 300 A.
- Large apartment or commercial buildings without a three-phase supply
- Buildings where an electrical load management system must control the boiler
- Radiators, radiant floors and hydro-air coils
- An indirect water heater on the second setpoint

What to know before installing
- 240 V single-phase, 60 Hz power supply and a current of 300 A according to Thermo 2000: a very large load for a single-phase service. We confirm it before any order.
- If the service is not large enough, a smaller size in the series or an increase in electrical capacity should be considered.
- The circulator and expansion tank are not among the supplied parts.
- Clearances: 3 in on the sides and back, 24 in at the front, 32 in above, 0 in at the floor.
- Weight: 310 lb (141 kg); the unit holds 11 US gal of water.
- Schneider Electric controller with backlit display
- Outdoor temperature sensor
- Low water cut-off
- On/off control switch
- Control and power fuses and breakers
- SCR relay
- 2 limit controls (automatic and manual)
- Factory-installed relief valve
- Drain valve

Frequently asked questions
Can our electrical service take this boiler?
Thermo 2000 publishes a current of 300 A for this model on 240 V single phase. During the free estimate, we review the building’s loads. If the margin is not there, we suggest a smaller size in the series or an increase in electrical capacity.
Can the boiler’s output be controlled?
Yes. The setpoint and output can follow a 0-10 Vdc external signal, for example from a building management system. The controller also communicates over BACnet IP or MS-TP, and the solid-state relay modulates output from 0 to 100%.
Is the low water cut-off supplied?
Yes. Thermo 2000 installs it as standard on VoltMax models above 60 kW, including this 72 kW model.
How many heating elements does it contain?
12 replaceable 6 kW Incoloy immersion elements. The controller rotates the order of the relay stages.
What warranty does Thermo 2000 offer?
A 10-year limited warranty on the tank, for closed-loop heating, and 2 years on electrical and mechanical components.
