Quick facts
A 3.5-ton coil that is straightforward to service
Accessible from the front
The evaporator coil remains one of the hardest parts of a central system to reach: it sits above the furnace, often in a corner of the basement. On Arcoaire’s END4X42L17A, the cabinet’s front panel comes off. The technician inspects and cleans the coil without undoing the connection to the furnace, which makes service simpler and faster.
The rest of the cabinet follows the same logic: pre-painted steel, foil-faced insulation to keep it from sweating, hemmed flanges. Inside, the main tubing and fins are aluminum, with copper stubs for the connections, and the TXV is bolted on at the factory, equalizer tube already brazed in.
At a glance
The END4X42L17A is a 3.5-ton (42,000 BTU/h) N evaporator coil, R-410A, in a 17-1/2 in cabinet that lines up flush with furnace and air handler cabinets of the same width. It installs in upflow or downflow. For a 21 in unit, the same capacity comes as the END4X42L21A.
It suits good-sized single-family homes and two-storey houses heated by a 17-1/2 in electric furnace, on the North Shore as in Laval, whether to add central air conditioning or to replace a cased coil of the same width.
Before installation: lines, clearance and airflow
Three checks come before ordering. The refrigerant lines first: the coil calls for a 7/8 in suction connection and a 3/8 in liquid connection, and lines of the wrong diameter or in poor condition are replaced before installation. Clearance next: room must be kept in front of the cabinet to remove the access panel. The blower last, which must deliver 1,225 to 1,600 CFM, the range given for this size. Since the ICP sheet does not state use with a heat pump, we also confirm the match with the outdoor unit.

Frequently asked questions
What is the front access panel for?
It comes off to give access to the coil. The technician can then inspect and clean it without undoing the connection to the furnace.
When should the coil be cleaned?
That depends mostly on the filter and how the system is used. A filter changed regularly spaces out cleanings; a technician checks the coil’s condition during service.
Are my refrigerant lines suitable?
The coil calls for a 7/8 in suction connection and a 3/8 in liquid connection. We check the diameter and condition of the lines in place during the visit.
Is there a wider version?
Yes. The END4X42L21A offers the same capacity in a 21 in cabinet, for units of that width.
Does it work with a heat pump?
The ICP spec sheet does not say so for this model. We confirm the match with your outdoor unit before ordering.
