Quick facts
The protective roof for outdoor units is installed above a heat pump's outdoor unit. It protects the unit from snow sliding off the roof, icicles falling from a gutter and freezing rain that coats the top of the unit. It is available in three sizes.
Whatever falls from the roof lands on the outdoor unit
In Montréal, many outdoor units end up under a sloped roof, a gutter or an upper-floor balcony. After a storm or a thaw, chunks of snow and icicles fall straight onto the unit. They can dent the casing, or damage the grille or the fan. Freezing rain, for its part, forms a crust of ice on top. The protective roof deflects all of this.
Three sizes
- Up to 18,000 BTU: for small-capacity outdoor units.
- 37 × 19 in
- 44 × 22 in
For a large unit with two fans, see our protective roof extension.
An installation that lets the unit breathe
The roof must not block the unit's air intake or discharge: it is installed while respecting the clearances required by the heat pump manufacturer. It protects the top of the unit, but does not replace proper height above the snow on the ground: a wall bracket or a ground stand is still needed where snow builds up.

Frequently asked questions
Which size do I need?
For a small unit, the up-to-18,000-BTU size. Otherwise, compare the outdoor unit’s dimensions with the 37 × 19 in and 44 × 22 in sizes. Send us the model and we tell you the right size.
Does the roof affect how the heat pump runs?
Not if it is installed with the clearances the equipment maker asks for, so air comes in and out freely.
Is it useful if the unit is not under the roof edge?
Less so. The protective roof is mainly for units under a sloped roof, an eavestrough or a balcony that sheds snow and ice.
Can you install it?
Yes. Our technicians fit it when they install your heat pump or on an existing unit, everywhere in Greater Montréal.
